Three weeks of very limited sleep is starting to take its toll, but as always, well worth it to watch the Aussies take on the Tour de France.
Our own local hero Paul Fellows has returned home from the Junior Track Championships in South Africa with some more bling to hang around his neck. Paul finished third in his pet event the Keiren bringing home a junior world bronze medal, a fantastic effort. The Australian team collected a hoard of medals between them 13 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze.
Our local juniors have been heading out to Wantabadgery the last couple of weekends getting in some home advantage for the State junior championships which will be held on the 9th and 10th of August. The seniors also joined them this week with a 40 km road race over a pretty testing course.
Volunteers will be needed for the running of the junior championships and the produce market, bacon and egg stall, on the same weekend. Any seniors that can help with either of these please give your name to one of the committee members (see the website). The clubs monthly meeting is to be held 7.30 pm tuesday 5th of August at 8 Hakea place Springvale all members are welcome to attend.

The Wagga Cycle club juniors continued their busy winter programme last weekend competing in the Canberra Kowalski Women’s and Junior Tour. This tour is a snap shot of the National championships with entries from every state in Australia including a squad from NZ. The weather was perfect for racing with a road race and Criterium on the Saturday and a road race and time trial on the Sunday.
Cameron Scott in the under 11’s produced a sensational tour result coming home with a first place in the Overall General Classification (GC). Cameron finished 2nd in both road races, 2nd in the Criterium and 1st in the time trial. Saxon Hodges and Lachlan Scott also preformed well with consistent results over the 2 days and finishing 5th and 6th on the GC. Greg Westerman competed in the U/13’s against a very competitive field of riders finishing with a good 13th on GC.
Emma Apolony was a stand out rider in the under 13 girls finishing 3rd in both road races 4th in the Criterium and 3rd in the Time trial with a 3rd in the overall GC, Lucy Regan also riding consistently in the under 15’s. In the men’s under 15’s Matthew Garlan continued his good form with an 8th place in the overall GC finishing with the lead bunch in each stage. Jeremy Scott also competed well in this age group with a 13th place in the GC.
In the under 17 men Josh Apolony and Isaac Gilmore competed against a huge line up of 80 riders from across Australia and New Zealand. Josh had a great ride in the Criterium finishing 15th and a 23rd position finish on the Sunday in the road race; this gave Josh 25th in the GC for the tour, 3rd NSW rider. This is a great result for a first year under 17 rider. Isaac put in a consistent effort over the two days with his best result in the Criterium. Congratulations to all the riders and well done.
Paul Fellows has arrived in South Africa and we look forward to hearing results from the Junior World Track Championships next week. Results can be found at www.juniorworlds.co.za
Don’t forget to get along to the Rotary Produce Markets at the Civic centre this weekend and support the egg and bacon stall.
The club would also like to express their deepest sympathy to the Marshall family at the loss of Michael’s mother last week. Mick has accepted a transfer to Bathurst and we all wish him the best, Sonia, Jess and Zach to follow later in the year. A huge loss to Wagga but a massive win to Bathurst.

With the running of the fourth stage of the Tour de Riverina and the Goulburn junior tour on last weekend the club was a little short on numbers for its club race. In the 3km handicap Aedon O’Shea and Aedon Pretious fought it out for 1st and 2nd. In the 10km race the back markers put up a good chase but couldn’t quite catch the lead bunch. Alex Inch took out first, Jonathon Carroll 2nd and Jess Marshall in third. The seniors that were there rode out and did a 15 km race.
The news from the Goulburn tour was a beautiful weekend for cycling and some good results across all grades. In the U/11’s Cameron Scott road well over the four events to finish 2nd overall on the General classification (GC) with Saxon Hodges and Lacklan Scott finishing 4th and 5th GC respectively. In the U/13 Boys Morgan Street Cycles Max Housden continued his dominance finishing 1st in 3 stages and 1st in the GC another fantastic effort with Greg Westerman finishing with the bunch and putting in a consistent effort . Emma Apolony finished 3rd overall in the U/13 girls with a great effort on the first day of competition picking up 2nd in the criterium. In the U/15s Matt Garlan from the Orthodontics Wagga Southern sports academy squad, finished 4th in the GC with a great effort for 3rd in the time trial his team mate Jeremy Scott finishing out of the placings but putting in a good effort as did Baden Housden in B grade. The Orthodontics Wagga Gwen French Memorial 2 Day Tour was a great success for the Wagga Cycling Club on the weekend. Held in cold but perfect road riding conditions 130 riders from Under 9’s to U 19 took to the testing Wantabagery course. The good conditions made for some spectacular bunch finishes on the line, the skill and competitiveness from all grades way beyond their riding years. To win the overall tour riders must compete in every stage, a prologue time trial and 3 road races each on different courses and varying lengths
Wagga cyclist Zac Marshall won the overall tour in the Under 9 with a win in all four stages of the tour. In the under 11’s Cameron Scott took out the overall honours and the under 13 age group was Max Housden, all these riders coming off the back of a very successful track season and will be the cyclist to watch in the future. Others to ride well in these age groups were Bede Funnell and Greg Westerman with a never give in attitude.
In the under 15 men Matthew Garlan and Jeremy Scott finished 3rd and 4th overall in a very good field of riders with a couple of very close sprints to line from both of these very talented Orthodontics Southern Sports Academy riders. First year 15 women’s rider Lucy Regan put in a solid effort against a very good field completing the tour and finishing 7th overall.
The hotly contested under 17’s was broken up into A and B grade with Brodie Pearse and 1st year rider Josh Apolony riding the A grade for Wagga. Brodie put in a consistent effort over the two days to finish 9th overall with Josh having a great second day of the tour coming home in the lead bunches and finishing a very respectable 17th overall and the one to keep an eye on next year. Isaac Gilmore was the standout rider in the B grade with a consistent effort finishing 5th overall.
A big thank you to the Wantabagery fire brigade for all their help and bbq facilities both days.

The 30 km group headed off torward Big Springs road with the other riders doing a 45 km race starting in the other direction and then chasing the other bunch to the finish. Thank you to all the people who helped over the weekend to stage the Butch Menz Memorial road race at Collungullie. The Butch Menz memorial handicap always provides some excitement and the 2008 was no exception. The usual excitement of a bunch finish had the addition of a strong crosswind, which saw a clash of wheels in the bunch resulting in Phil Twigg losing most of the spokes in his back wheel and another rider lost a couple of spokes in a front wheel, thankfully no one crashed. The eventual winner was Brodie Pearse(Wagga) from Rohan Taylor(Kidsons) and Richard McCelland(Albury). Christian MacDonald(Cobram) led the tired Scratch bunch home for fastest time.
Jamie Green and Lucy Regan have returned from the National Track Carnival, both the riders represented the club well with personal best times in all their events. Lucy best result was in the 500TT taking 3 second off state time to finish 10th in 41.518 s and Jamie took 2 seconds off his time finishing 6th in a great time of 35.719 s.
Presentation night is this Friday at the Commercial club at 7pm with dinner available from 6pm, just ring and book a table. Southern Division Championships will be held on Sunday so if you haven’t entered yet get you name to Sonya Marshall as soon as possible.

Congratulations to the club and thank you to all its members for a very safe and successful Junior and Masters carnival over weekend. Over 160 riders from all over the NSW, VIC, ACT and families from as far away as Devonport TAS and Central Districts SA enjoyed the two days of racing, most competitors taking home some of the $4000 in prize money.
Last Wednesday was a perfect night for cycling and with scratch race club championships being held everyone was keen to get the night under way. Unfortunately a touch of wheels in the junior warm up had two riders come down with under 9’s Zac Marshall hitting his head. A precautionary trip in the ambulance to make sure all was ok and Zac returned to the track with a impressive egg on his forehead and a few days off the bike.
Once the track was cleared the pocket rocket took to the track for a 1 lap h/cap Yannick Wigeilaka rode strongly to win from a fast finishing Jackson Wykes and Sebastian Quirk. In the 2 lap Jackson got the better of Yannick with Zach Burton coming in third. In the U/11B’s Bede Funnell, nursing a sore hip and skin off his elbow from the fall earlier in the evening, raced like a seasoned professional to take out the 1 lap from Brandon Ellis, riding a fixed wheel for the first time and Connor Higgins. In the 2 lapper Alex Inch took the win from Jessica Tracey from Albury and Darcy Irvine. In the U11A’s the coach got the h/caps just about perfect with a very close finish on the line, Kruse Harrison managing to hold on for first in front of Emily Bruce and Virginia Carroll. In the 3 lapper Dot Funnell rode a good race to win from Kruse Harrison and Cameron Scott off scratch. Between these races all of the juniors were put into age scratch races and rode for club championship medal the results will be posted closer to presentations night.
All the remaining grades warmed up with a heart starter and then contested their club championship scratch races with some very exciting finishes in all grades. To finish the night off the U/13’s and 15’s rode an all in 4 lap graded scratch race with the back markers getting up, Jeremy Smith taking first from Matt Garlan and Max Pearse. The senior 5 lap all in was taken out by limit with Greg Scott taking the win from Glen Ross and Steve Taylor.
Club championships will continue this week if the weather is favourable.
