Yet again the
Wagga Wagga Cycling Club’s Wednesday night track racing meet attracted over 60
riders, with entries form as far as Albury and Cootamundra. In the seniors, the
Albury bandits paired up to make things difficult for the local posse who made
sure the ‘bad guys’ did not escape with too much loot. It all made for some
wonderful racing – the sort that the Wagga Wagga Cycling Cub provides on a
regular basis.
In the club’s nursery, the Pocket Rockets had some great competition with Emily
Bruce and Edwina Funnell taking out wins. Zach Marshall and Lachlan Scott took
out the placings. In the C grade U9s Tristan Carruthers and Angus ‘Angry’ South
won their races. Jessica Marshall and Kate Hopkins shared the placings. The B
grade races were won by Cameron Scott and William Bassett. The placings were
filled by Sam South, Joe Hindmarsh and Liam Moston. In the A graders, Max
Housden and Jonno Carroll dominated while Sam South riding up and Greg Westerman
took out the placings.
The U13 had some good racing with James English and Tommy Hindmarsh having wins.
The placings went to Matty Garlan, Sarah English and James English. The
U15/17/‘Old Girls’ also had some tough racing with Roxanne Hopkins, Jamie Green
and Harry Lollback having wins. Tommy Regan, Mrs ‘Lizzy’ Regan, Blocker Pearse
and Dean Moston took out the placings. Next week, the Regan-Hopkins fan club may
be asked to leave the recording area if they get too rowdy.
The open B grade 2 lap handicap was won by ‘Slim’ Sam Stevenson from Stuy Hume
and Ellen Marks. The A grade 2 lap handicap was won by Paul Fellows from Luke
Harvey and Jessie Hume. The combined Open 5 lap handicap was won by ‘Bandit 1’
Brendan Washington from Billy Robertson and ‘B2’ Trent Perry. The 12 lap B grade
Scratch race was won by Mick Marshall from U17 riders Jamie Green and Blocker
Pearse. The A grade 20 lap scratch race saw some tough racing with B1 and B2
making regular attacks on the pack. The locals finally won the day with Paul
Fellows winning from Billy Robertson and Dirk Roshier. A great effort from the
Albury duo of Brendan Washington and Trent Perry made it exciting for the
spectators a fast paced race.
In the Country Track Championships held in Gosford on the weekend, medals were
won by James English, Sarah English, Lucy Regan, Matty Garlan, Ellen Marks, Paul
Fellows and Dirk Roshier. A great effort by all the riders who traveled north.
Don’t forget to register for the X-mas Victorian carnivals and the Wagga
Carnival.
30 Nov 2005
A beautiful
summer night made for some great racing with a large number of riders
registering for the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club’s regular Wednesday track cycling
meeting. Coach Bob was back in attendance much to the relief of his understudy
and it was great to hear that the legendary Dave Tucker was back in the centre
doing the lap counting. He still has a little way to go to reach the standard
set by the lap counter the previous week.
In the Pocket Rockets, Zach Marshall and Edwina Funnell graced the tape first
while Charlie Hamilton and Emily Bruce took out the placings. The U11 C grade
races were won by Virginia Carroll, Jessica Marshall and Joe Wallace with Kate
Hopkins in the placings. The U11 B Grade races were won by Cameron Scott and Sam
South. William Bassett and Joe Hindmarsh shared the placings. The U11 A Grade
races were shared between Max Housden and Greg Westerma with Jonno Carroll,
Brooke Michalowski and Tim Dean taking the placings.
Alex Ross won the U13 handicap races while Tommy Hindmarsh won the ‘handicap
scratch’ race. Placings were shared by James English, Sarah English, Baden
Housden, Matty Garlan and Joe van Wel. Dean Moston and Tommy Regan won the
U15/17 handicap races while the ‘G man’ Jamie Green won the scratch race.
Caitlin Brookes Jonno Ham featured in the placings.
The Open 2 lap Handicap was won by Luke Harvey followed by Dirk Roshier and
James Krebs. The 5 lap handicap was won by Dirk Roshier with Nigel ‘Turtle’
Irvine returning to take 2nd and Steve Marks 3rd. The B grade scratch race was
won by James Krebs with Jonno Andreou 2nd and Ellen Marks 3rd. In the Open 20
lap race, Paul Fellows took the money with the veteran Billy Roberston 2nd and
Dirk Roshier having a great night in 3rd place.
The draw for the 100 Club was held last week with the Rules Club winning the
naming rights to the Golden Wheel Carnival. Riders, don’t forget to register
with CNSW for the carnival. The Pocket Rockets do not need to register with the
Cycling Federation – just let Bob know if the kids are riding. Parents, please
put up your hands to help on the gate or the canteen for an hour or two over the
weekend.
This week’s thought – check your handlebars have end-plugs before riding on the
track.
21 Nov 2005
A big night of
track racing for the Wagga Wagga Cycling club was made even bigger by the
fantastic weather despite the wind squalls the night before. Another big
registration of riders allowed for some very good handicapping by Bob’s
apprentice Rob Housden. Putting the finishing touch on a high quality event, the
stand-in lap counter must also be congratulated on the exceptional standard of
his performance.
The U9 C grade races were won by Zach Marshall and Charlie Hamilton. Taking out
placings were Edwina Funnell and Lachlan Scott. In the U9 B grade races, Cameron
Scott, Joe Hindmarsh and Louis Funnell were the winners. Placegetters were Joe
Wallace, Jessica Marshall, Liam Moston, Kate Hopkins and Virginia Carroll. The A
grade races were won by Brooke Michalowski, Tim Dean and Max Housden. The
placegetters were Kate Bassett and Greg Westerman.
In the U13 races James English, Tommy Hindmarsh and Matty Garlan took the
winnings. The placings were taken by Alex Ross, Sarah English, Joe van Wel and
William Carroll. The U15/17’s had some good racing with Tommy Regan, Dean Moston
and Jamie Green winning the three races. Placings went to Isaac Gilmore, Harry
Lollback, Netasha Pearse and Blocker Pearse.
The Open 2 lap handicap was won by Steve Marks from Luke Harvey and Stuy Hume.
The 5 lap handicap was won by Chris Wilcox from Stuy Hume and Ellen Marks. Mick
Marshall won the B grade scratch race from Ellen Marks and Steve Lee. The A
grade scratch race was won by Paul Fellows from Billy Robertson and Nathan
Kelly.
In a big weekend of racing for Wagga Wagga Cycling Club members, Jess Hume won
the Bronze medal in the NSW U19 Pursuit Championships at the Dunc Gray Velodrome.
In the U17 races, the club was also represented by Ellen Marks, Dirk Roshier and
Paul Fellows who all rode well to bring home quite a bit of money. The other
cashed-up rider is Steve Marks who came 2nd in the local crits on Friday and
followed it up with a 1st in the 55km road race and a 7th in the Wagga to Albury
Handicap race. Mick Marshall was 7th in that race. Steve Lee was 2nd in the D
grade crits while Lindsay Jordan and Rob Housden also featured in the money over
the weekend.
With the Wheelrace coming up soon, please put your hand up for a job. Thanks to
all the helpers at Wednesday night club racing – keep up the good work.
Until next week, enjoy the riding and this weeks word of advice comes from our
own Fred Bassett – air in your tyres helps you ride faster!!

LIGHTS,
weather, action!!! All went so smoothly last Wednesday, it was as though God was
watching from the grandstand. All ran to clockwork with riders putting on a
fantastic show. Another big registration of riders across all the age groups and
some good handicapping made life tough for the up and coming judges and the
seasoned veterans of the judging stand.
In the Pocket Rockets races, the only competitors were Zachary Marshall and
Lachlan Scott. Both riders had wins with 3 races being run between them. The U11
B grade saw Cameron Scott, Louis Funnell and Tristan Caruthers and Sam South
with wins. The placegetters were Joe Wallace, Alice Ham, and Joe Hindmarsh.
The U11 A grade races were dominated by Andrew Ham and Jeremy Scott, Placings
went to Brooke Michalowski, the ever-smiling Katie Bassett, Greg Westerman and
Max Housden. The U13’s again had a big field with James (Jimbo) English and
Tommy Hindmarsh taking the honours. The hard working Alex Ross was consistent
with 3 second placings. William Carroll and Erin Doyle shared 3rd place.
The U15/17 group was also quite large with U13 riders Isaac Gilmore and Tommy
Regan taking the 2 handicap races. Jamie Green took out the scratch race.
Placings went to Coota’s Dean Moston, Harry Lollback, Caitlin Brooks, Jonno Ham,
Blocker Pearse and Tiny Tommy Bassett.
The combined 5 lap handicap was won by Jess Hume from Steve Marks and Stuy Hume.
The Senior B grade handicap was won by Chris Wilcox from Ian Hume and Ellen
Marks. The A grade handicap was won by Paul Fellows from Jess Hume and Steve
Marks. The B grade 15 lap scratch race was won by Mick Marshall from Jonno
Andreaou and Ellen Marks. The final race on the card was the 20 lap scratch race
won by Nathan Kelly from Paul Fellows and Bill Robertson.
The Wagga Wagga Cycling Club has requested permission to run racing on Sunday
morning on Elizabeth Avenue. Riders, don’t forget that dark glasses are banned
on the track once the lights come on. You are also reminded to check your
equipment – handlebar end plugs, cleats etc. Don’t forget to register for the
Golden Wheel Carnival on 17 and 18 December. If you are interested in donating
$100 to the club, you can enter the 100 club draw and get tickets to the
sponsors marquee at the Wheelrace Carnival.

Unfortunately,
a potentially great night of racing was decimated by the failure of the track
lighting for the senior program. We still had an excellent registration of
riders with more and more new faces each week. Some of the old faces are also
gaining in confidence and tossing their freewheelers out in preference for the
fixed wheelers. .
The Pocket Rockets opened the program with an excellent demonstration of their
newfound skills. The star was Cameron Scott winning 2 races while Edwina Funnell
won the third. Placegetters were Zachary Marshall, Charlie Hamilton, Kate
Hopkins and Emily Bruce. .
The U11B races were shared between Louis Funnell, Joe Hindmarsh and Joe Wallace.
Taking out the placings were Molly Bates, and Sam South. The A grade saw Max
Housden and Jeremy Scott having wins while Tim Dean, Greg Westerman, Johnathon
Carroll and Brooke Michalowski shared the placings. The U13 scratch race was won
by Tommy Hindmarsh from a fast finishing Isaac (Happy) Gilmore with Matty Garlan
third. Jamie Green won the U15 scratch race from Blocker Prease and Happy
Gilmore. .
The senior B grade scratch race was won by Stuy Hume from Mick Marshall and
Chris Wilcox. Paul Fellows broke away in the sprint to win the senior A grade
scratch race from Nathan Kelly and Bill Robertson. .
Council assures me that all is right with the lights and we can look forward to
a big program tonight. Riders remember our rule that sunglasses are banned on
the track once lights come on. Don’t forget to register for the Golden Wheel
Carnival on 17 and 18 December. If you are interested in donating $100 to the
club, you can enter the 100 club draw and get tickets to the sponsors marquee at
the Wheelrace Carnival. .

With 60 riders
registering for track racing, another very successful night of racing was
definitely on the cards. Last Wednesday night, the wind abated and the
temperature remained relatively mild while the racing was of a very high
standard.
First up were the Pocket Rockets with Lachlan Scott taking out 3 wins for the
night. Placegetters were Joseph Wallace, Alice Ham, Charlie Hamilton and Zachary
Marshall. The U11C races were won by Edwina Funell and Cameron Scott.
Placegetters were Emily Bruce and Kate Hopkins. The B grade races were won by
William Bassett, Joe Hindmarsh and Virginia Carroll. This trio also shared
placings. The A grade races were all won by Jeremy Scott. Placings went to Tim
Dean, Indi Bates, Greg Westerman, Brooke Michalowski, Tim Dean and Max Housden.
In the U13’s Harry Lollback, Tommy Hindmarsh and Isaac Gilmore had wins while
placings were shared between the trio as well. The U15’s saw Blocker Pearse and
Bryce Leske win their races while placings went to Tommy Bassett, Caitlin Brooks
and Jamie Green.
The B grade 2 lap handicap was won by Luke Harvey from Iain Hume and Mick
Marshall. The A grade 2 lapper went to Jess Hume from Sammy Stevenson and Steve
Marks. The 5 lap handicap was won by Dirk Roshier from Chris Wilcox and Jess
Hume. Chris fought back to win the 15 lap B grade scratch race with Mick (Motor)
Marshall 2nd and Ellen Marks 3rd. The open A grade 15 lap scratch race was won
by Nathan Kelly from Jess Hume in great form and big Rob Housden.
Racing is on again tonight with the juniors kicking off at 6.30 pm and the
seniors commencing at approximately 7.30 am. Don’t forget to register for the
Golden Wheel Carnival on 17 and 18 December. If you are interested in donating
$100 to the club, you can enter the 100 club draw and get tickets to the
sponsors marquee at the Wheelrace Carnival.
26 Oct 2005
The euphoria
of our first week of track racing was soon washed away by the rain that
commenced at 6.00 pm last week. While track racing was washed out, the junior
development group took the opportunity to kit out a few of the newcomers with
club gear for the track season ahead.
The Golden Wheel Wheelrace Carnival is to be held on the 17th and 18th of
December. The club is looking for members to get involved with the 100Club. The
advantage of this is a chance to win the naming rights for the carnival and
entry to the Sponsors Marquee with food and drink included for the afternoon.
The club is also looking for all the help it can get for this event so please do
not decline when asked.
The Ladies Auxiliary is also looking for parents to help with the canteen.
Despite the name of this group, I can assure you that they are not sexist. Help
with the canteen roster from mums and dads would be greatly appreciated. The
canteen raises valuable funds to help purchase equipment, pay for track hire and
lighting as well as providing some assistance to riders selected in state or
national teams. Don’t forget the raffle donations to be left with Ann Harvey.
Tonight at track racing, a trading table will be set up. Members are welcome to
bring along any second hand or new items they want sold – please label clearly
all items placed on the table.
Bob’s training is on Mondays commencing at 4.30 pm. The roll up has been
astounding, with many new riders giving cycling a go.

What an
unbelievable start to the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club’s track season. Fifty eight
riders registered for racing with many new starters in the junior and the senior
ranks. The weather was perfect and the night went without a hitch. While the
locals have long forgotten road racing, Richard Moffatt is still grinding out
the road miles as he attempts to regain his place on the national team.
As usual, the Pocket Rockets opened the night of racing. Emily Bruce and Kate
Hopkins had wins while places went to Lachlan Sott, Alice Ham, Ziggy Marshall
and Edwina Funnell. The U11B’s saw Angus South have 2 wins while placings went
to Jessica Marshall, Joe Hindmarsh, Sam South, Cam Scott and Louis Funnell. The
U11A’s saw Andrea Ham, Cariad Wallace, Greg Westerman and Tim Dean share the
placings while Max Housden and Jeremy Scott had a win each.
The U13A’s raffled the placings between them with Matty Garlan, Baden Housden,
Maxy Pearse, Alex Ross taking placings and Isaac Gilmore having 2 wins. In the
U13B’s Lucy Regan had a win while Erin Doyle, Sarah English, James English and
Tommy Hindmarsh took out placings. The U15’s saw wins to Tara Bryan and Brodie
Pearse with placings to Jamie Green, Caitlin Brooks and Jhono Ham.
In the senior heart starters, Mick Marshall, Rob Housden and Brendon Washington
took out A, B and C grades respectively. Jim Krebs took out the 5 lap handicap
and Mick Marshall won the B grade scratch race with Chris Wilcox 2nd and Tara
Bryan 3rd. Paul Fellows won the A grade scratch race from Bill Robertson and
Brendon Washington. Unfortunately there were not enough riders for the duathlon
Richard Moffatt recently competed in the Sun Tour riding for the FDJ team. The
team managed to get their main rider Baden Cooke up for two wins but did not
feature in the placings. Richard’s next move is the 220 km Melbourne to
Warnambool race over the coming weekend followed by a well-earned rest. He may
even be talked into having a few rides on his track bike while he is in Wagga
Wagga.
Training is on Mondays commencing at 4.30 pm. The AGM is to be held at the Rules
Club at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 25 October. Come along and have a say in the running
of your club.

The lull
between the road and track seasons has given everyone a chance to recharge the
batteries before the fixed wheelers gather steam. Last Saturday, the Wagga Wagga
Cycling Club held it’s road season presentation at the Rules Club. The raffle
was also drawn on the night. The following day, the Moffatts made the trek to
Goulburn for the Goulburn to Sydney road race.
The culmination of the road season also saw the culmination of the cycling year.
The club championship medals were presented as were the major trophies for the
year. The junior cyclist of the year was won by Netasha Pearse and the senior
cyclist of the year was won by Jessie Hume. Others to feature were Greg
Westerman, Isaac Gilmore, Erin Doyle, Baden Housden, Alex Ross, Dirk Roshier,
Caitlin Brooks, Ellen Marks, Steven Marks and Bill Robertson. The Gold cup
series was won by Bill Robertson. Second Rob Housden followed by Mick Marshall
and Dirk Roshier . Simon Haworth and Jamie Green tied for 5th.
In the Goulburn to Sydney race, Richard Moffatt ran a very respectable 5th
place. The top four placegetters were all senior, professional team riders with
Richard still an U23 rider. A fantastic effort by Richard and hopefully this
puts him a step closer to touring with the National Team.
The major club raffle was drawn on the 24th of September and won by the Leske
family who donated it back to the club – thanks to the Leskes and all who
supported the raffle. In total, $3000 was raised for the club. A big thank you
must go to Beth and Trev Gilmore for their efforts in organizing the raffle.
Training starts on Wednesday the 5th of October at 4.00 pm. Track racing
commences on Wednesday the 12th of October with registration at 6.00 for
juniors. The duathlon will be planned for the 1st night of racing. If the
response is poor, the duathlon may not be included in future Wednesday night
racing.

Last weekend
saw the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club’s junior riders trek to Sydney the the NSW Road
and Criterium Cycling Championships. Unfortunately, this depleted the stocks
back home and despite my writings last Wednesday, there was no senior racing at
Wagga Wagga.
The State Road and Criterium Championships were well supported by the Wagga Club
with 17 riders reistered for the championships. In the U11’s we had Lucy Regan,
James English and Maxy Pearse. The U13 were tackled by Erin Doyle, Sarah
English, Matty Garlan, Isaac Gilmore and Tommy Regan. The U15’s saw Tara Bryan,
Caitlin Brooks, Nomie Pinto, Jamie Green and Brodie Pearse competing. In the
U17’s we had Ellen Marks, Netasha Pearse, Paul Fellows and Dirk Roshier. This
was undoubtedly the best club representation at the event.
The NSW Road Race Championships were held at Centennial Park on the Olympic
cycling course on Saturday. It was a tough course with deceptively nasty hills
throughout the course. First success came courtesy of Ellen Marks who won the
silver medal in the U17 Girls Road Race. In the U15 Girls Road Race newcomer,
Caitlin Brooks broke away with the eventual winner but was not able match her in
the sprint home. Caitlin rode an excellent race to take out the silver medal. In
the U13 Girls race, Erin Doyle rode a strong race to win the silver medal.
The Criterium Championships were held in glorious sunshine on Sunday at the Dunc
Gray Velodrome course. Heats were held in the U11 Boys, U13 Boys, U15 Boys and
the U17 Boys categories. The other categories had straight finals. Those to make
the finals were Tommy Regan, Matty Garlan, Dirks Roshier and Paul Fellows and
all the girls. Medal winners were Erin Doyle with a silver medal in the U13G,
Catlin Brooks with a silver medal in the U15G and Ellen Marks with a Gold medal
in the U17G. The girls capped off a fantastic weekend for female cycling in
Wagga Wagga with Ellen Marks and Caitlin Brooks selected in the NSW Road Cycling
Team to race in the National Championships at Moloolaba in early September.
Don’t forget the winter season presentation night on the 24th of September.at
7.30 pm at the Rules Club. Last year’s trophy holders, please return them ASAP
so that they can be engraved. Remember the club raffle. Sell those tickets so
that the club can buy some much needed equipment and plan for resurfacing of the
track.
10 Aug 2005
Saturday provided us with great weather for bike racing. The Wagga Wagga Cycling
Club took the opportunity to hold the club junior championships and then ran a
tough 34km race for the senior riders. The lockout from the airport grounds in
the name of security did very little to dampen our incredible club spirit and in
the words of Angry Anderson “we won’t be beaten”.
The warm weather brought out the masses with 24 junior riders competing for road
race and time trial club championships. The different age groups raced over
distances varying from 5km to 35km for the road race championships. The time
trials were held over 2.5 and 5km. The time trial winners will be revealed at
the club presentation night.
The senior race was run over 34km with 20 riders handicapped in 5 groups.
Scratch and block got together after 20 km and set of after the limity’s. 500m
from the finish line, the bunch caught Ellen Marks and then it was a mad
scramble for the line. Simon Haworth swooped the field with Dirk Roshier in tow.
Dirk won the sprint home from Billy Robertson with Greg Dyde 3rd, Simon 4th and
Jimmy Hogan 5th Fastest time of 51.18 went to Bill Robertson.
Next weekend is a big one for the club with the juniors heading to Sydney for
the NSW Road Race and Criterium Championships. Jimmy Hogan heads south to
Bendigo in search of some gold in the Ron Vernon 108km handicap race. Senior
racing will still be on as usual at the Elizabeth Avenue course with
registration at 1.00 pm for a 1.30 pm start. Remember to angle park downhill
from the gate. All race officials – DON’T FORGET TO WEAR SAFETY VESTS.
Don’t forget the winter season presentation night on the 24th of September at
7.30 pm at the Rules Club – bring a plate of snacks but drinks and bistro meals
can be purchased. Remember the club raffle. Sell those tickets so that the club
can buy some much needed equipment and plan for resurfacing of the track.

A big weekend
of racing was enjoyed last weekend by the Wagga Cycling Club.
Saturday saw the Wagga Motors Open held and the race was won by Richard Moffatt.
With 5klm to go, a small group of 4 broke away from the 100 strong field,
Richard broke away from that group with 2klm to go to win the 120 klm race.
Richard also placed fastest time of 2hrs. 32 min 27 secs. A very pleased Moffatt,
who now races nationally and internationally said “a win in your home town is
always good”. Congratulations Richard.
The Butch Menz Memorial Race held on Sunday brought in some great results for
our junior riders.
Gregory Westerman took out first in the 5klm race, followed by Jessica Marshall.
The 15klm race was won by Ellen Marks, with Baden Housden 2nd and Isaac Gilmore
in 3rd. Fantastic effort kids. Congratulations to Wayne Collingwood from Tolland
Cycling Club who took out 3rd in the Seniors race.
Also over the weekend several of our riders competed in Sydney. Waratah Park
Sutherland welcomed riders for the NSW Country Championships. Medal winners were
Netasha Pearse, Thomas Regan and Erin Doyle all bringing home Gold, with Max
Pearse collecting a Silver and Tara Bryant picking up a Bronze. Sunday saw the
Southern Cross Junior Carnival in with Erin Doyle collecting a 1st and 2nd,
Sarah English bringing home two 3rd places, Max Pearse a 2nd and James English
two 1st places. The kids had a great weekend and most brought home prize money,
which I’m sure, they’ve donated to their parents for fuel expenses!! Not all
results were available at time of writing, apologies to anyone that has been
missed. Great results achieved by the Wagga Club overall wherever they were
riding.
27 Apr 2005
Saturday
provided yet another perfect day of road racing for the Wagga Cycling Club. A
large number of riders and newcomers turned out to enjoy the racing and the
weather.
Greg Westerman brought home a 1st and fastest time in the 5km race, followed by
Jessica Marshall and Cariad Wallace. The 10klm race was won by Erin Doyle with
fastest time of 22.16 followed closely by Will Carroll and Sarah English in 3rd.
Isaac Gilmore turned on a great ride to come in 1st in the 17km ride with Max
Pearce 2nd and Mitch Harvey 3rd, Isaac also had the fastest time.
The girls dominated the places in the 35km race with Tash Pearce bringing in
1st, Bryce Leske 2nd and Ellan Marks 3rd. Bryce brought home the fastest time.
Rob Housden, Hilton Williams and Jess Hume brought in the respective 1st, 2nd
and 3rd places in the 54km race followed closely by Mick Marshall, Simon Haworth
and Paul Fellows.
This weekend will provide some great entertainment as Wagga hosts the Junior 2
Day Tour. There is a large number of entries and we are looking forward to a
great weekend. The starting venue is Brunskill Avenue, Forest Hill (behind the
airport) - you can´t miss us, bring a chair and a hat and we look forward to
providing spectators with a great weekend of racing. Don´t forget....anyone
wishing to join us for dinner and presentation on Saturday evening, please leave
your names at the caravan on the day of the tour.
13 Apr 2005
Saturday
presented glorious weather for the first run of our road racing season. Wagga
hosted riders from the Albury / Wodonga area who have chosen to do some racing
with us. It was a great afternoon with some new riders venturing out for the
first time.
Gunning was the destination for 8 Wagga riders contesting with the ACT Vets
Club. Simon Haworth, Nigel Irvine (A Grade), Jim Hogan (B Grade), Steve Marks (C
Grade), and Mick Marshall, Mick Fitzgerald, Rob Housden and Aaron Matthews (D
Grade) all travelled across. The racing was demanding with the hilly terrain.
Saturday put A, B & C Grade to the test with a 100 km road race and D Grade
completing a 50 km ride. Sunday saw riders complete a 5 km time trial with
another 50 km road race for A B & C and 38 klm for D Graders. The best results
for the weekend were from the D Grade riders with Mick Marshall placing 3rd in
General Classification and overall points, and Rob Housden bobbing up for a
second in Sunday´s road race.
This weekend brings the Lockhart Criterium. Juniors will travel the Lockhart
course on Sunday April 17. Please be there at 11.00 for an 11.30 start. Riverina
Points Score Race kicks off around 12.30 for the seniors - entry and details
please contact Barry O´Hagan 69252404. Saturday offers a Riverina Point Score

O´Hagan 69252404.
Preparations are well under way for the Junior 2 Day Tour to be held the weekend
of April 30th and May 1st. This promises to be a great weekend of racing.
06 Apr 2005
The 2004/2005
track season culminated last weekend with the club presentation afternoon held
at the Murrumbidgee River Cruises headquarters at the Eunony Bridge. An
excellent roll up made for a very pleasant afternoon on the river bank. Thanks
to Greg Bannon for a great afternoon and his support for the Wagga Wagga Cycling
Club throughout the year. Club riders also made the trip to Breadalbane near
Goulburn to kick off the 2005 Road season with the Southern Division Road
Championships.
The time trail championship results for the track were kept under wraps until
presentation. The winners were Apryll Green (U9), Lucy Regan (U11), Sarah

Any new cyclists wishing to join in are most welcome to come and meet the

with the fantastic encouragement and guidance offered by the cyclists, parents
and our fantastic coach Bob Robertson.

Another
fantastic roll up of riders made for an excellent night of club racing. With the
State Track Championships just around the corner, the tempo seems to be rising
throughout the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club. While the club members are involved
with the club championships, Richard Moffatt is preparing for his own assault on
Europe with the National team.
The Pocket Rockets had 2 handicap races followed by the club championship sprint
race. Jessica Marshall and Charlie Hamilton won the handicap races whilst
placings were filled by William Bassett and the man with the rubber neck, Angus
South. The U11C grade one lap handicap was won by Tristan Carruthers followed by
Tommy Hindmarsh and Sam South. The 2 lap handicap was won by Andrew Ham followed
by Tommy Hindmarsh and Greg Westerman showing some dash.
In the U11 B grade handicaps, Alex Ross and Sam Shaw took the honours. Placings
were shared by the bonny trio of Isabelle Mastroianni, Brooke Michalowski and
Lucy Regan yet to make her fashion statement for 2005. The U11 A grade handicaps

Johnathon Carroll and Maxy Pearse.

Bryce also won the 8 lap scratch race from Netasha Pearse and Tara Bryan. The
Open 2 lap handicap was won by Bill Robertson from Luke Harvey and visiting
World Vets Champion Keith Oliver. Keith won the 5 lap handicap from Dirk Roshier
and Nigel Irvine. The B grade 12 lap scratch race was won by Bryce Leske from
Steven Marks who just pipped his daughter Ellen into 3rd place. Nathan Kelly won
the A grade 20 lap scratch race from Bill Robertson and Nigel Irvine.
Richard Moffatt informs me that he is soon to leave for Canberra to join the
National team to finalise preparations for their assault on Italy in early
April. Unfortunately, I have not got the results of the duathlon, which was a
success yet again.
Racing commences tonight with the juniors kicking off at 6.30 pm with the club
championship scratch races to be held.
9 Feb 2005
The weather
seems have dominated proceedings over the last few weeks. Who would have
expected winter woollies and gumboots in early February. Unfortunately that was
the case last Wednesday, resulting in the cancellation of club racing. Despite
this setback to state championship preparations, Wagga Wagga Cycling Club riders
were still able to grab medals in the NSW teams Pursuit Championships.
With racing cancelled last Wednesday, Wagga riders prepared for a weekend of
racing at the Dunc Gray and Tempe velodromes over the weekend. Southern Sports
academy Coach, Tommy ‘Grub’ Dawson and his tolerant wife Marg volunteered to
supervise 14 of our juniors over the weekend. To their credit, the kids were
extremely well behaved and did their club and City proud. Thanks must also go to
Nicky Alsemgeest for chaperoning the athletes in Sydney.
On the Saturday, the Wagga U17 Teams pursuit entry comprising Netasha Pearse,
Ellen Marks, Bryce Leske, Dirk Roshier and Paul Fellows put in two fantastic
rides to take the bronze medal in their championship event. The veterans team
comprising Dean Hart, Nigel Irvine, Bill Robertson and Steve marks rode off for
the bronze medal but unfortunately they could not maintain the high standard
they set earlier in the day and had to settle for 4th place. Once again, a
fantastic effort and more so considering that this was the first time two of the
four riders had ridden on a velodrome.
The junior riders had an excellent weekend gaining valuable experience on the
velodrome. In the U17 Mens events, the club was represented by Paul Fellows and
Dirk Roshier who both had excellent results over the weekend. The U17 girls were
represented by Netasha Pearse and Ellen Marks, Rachel Gilmore and Elyce Payne
who rode very well all weekend and came away with lots of money. Tara Bryan and
Nomie Pinto were in the U15 Girls category and were up against some tough
competition from their Dubbo and Goulburn rivals. Despite this, they both came
away with money. Bryce Leske, Jamie Green and Blocker Pearse were our U15 Boys
and between them, they let the rest know that quite a few State medals in their
category would be coming back to Wagga Wagga.
Tonight is the first event in the club championship series. All going to plan,
the time trial events will be held with the 16th and 23rd of February planned
for the sprint derbys and the scratch races.
In an overhaul of our clothing accessories, we now have a new baseball style of
hat and ‘bucket’ hat in yellow and black. They can be viewed at the caravan on
Wednesday night with stocks arriving in the next week. The baseball hat will
cost $15.
Racing commences tonight with the juniors kicking off at 6.30 pm for the
juniors. The RSL Junior Carnival is on this weekend and plenty of help will be
required so please do not hesitate in coming forward with assistance. Another
date to put in your diary is the first Tuesday of each month. The club meeting
is held on this day at the Rules Club at 7.30 pm. Come and have a say in the
running of your club.
02 Feb 2005
The weather
was close to perfect and the riders were primed but the all important lights
failed to fire. Despite this setback, the Wagga Wagga Cycling club was able to
complete the listed events last week. Following a hectic start to the New Year,
the club’s riders had a rest and took things a bit easier at home during the
week.
The Auto Panel repairs Pocket Rockets again tussled it out over three handicap
races. Joe Wallace, William Bassett and Virginia Carroll had wins while Jessica
Marshall, Angus Southand Apryll Green took out placings. The Fearnes Coaches U11
Bs had a good turnout of riders with eight riders competing over 2 handicap
races and one scratch race. Tommy Hindmarsh had 2 wins while Sam South won the
scratch race. Placings were filled by Isabella Mastroianni, Katie Bassett, Liam
Moston, Joe Hindmarshand Greg Westerman.
The Rules Club U11 As also had 3 races with a good field of 8 seasoned riders
taking to the track. Alex Ross and Johnathon Carroll won the handicap races
while mighty Max Pearse won the scratch race. Placing in this group were filled
by Sarah English, James English, Max Housden and Sam Shaw.
The U13s had a good turnout of 7 riders with Matty Garlan and Sam Sobels winning
the sprint derby. The 2 lap handicap was won by Mitchell Harvey while Dean
Moston won the 3 lap handicap. The 5 lap scratch race was made interesting with
the U11 As invited to join the U13s. The race was won by Maxy Housden with Sarah
English 2nd and Baden Housden 3rd.
In the U15 group, the sprint derbys were won by Bryce leske and Nomie Pinto. The
2 lap handicap was won by Jamie Green from Blocker Pearse and Thomas Bassett.
The 4 lap handicap was won by Netasha Pearse from Tara Bryan and Ellen Marks.
The scratch race was won by Netasha Pearsefrom Blocker Pearse and Ellen Marks.
The seniors had an excellent turnout of riders who, unfortunately had to be
rushed due to failure of the lights. I believe recent storms had some impact on
this. The 2 lap handicap was won by Nathan Kelly with Nigel Irvine 2nd and Billy
Robertson 3rd. The 5 lap handicap was won by Richard Moffatt from Dirk Roshier
and Nathan Kelly. The combined A and B grade scratch race was run over 12 laps.
The B grade race was won by Steve Marks from Jonno Andreaou and Bryce Leske. The
A grade race was won by Richard Moffatt from Billy Robertson and Nigel Irvine.
Club Track championships are to be held on Wednesday 9th, 16th and 23rd of
February. At this stage, the flying lap is planned for the 9th. The Sprint
Derbys are scheduled for the 16th and the scratch races are planned for the
23rd. In the event of rain, the schedules may be changed.
Racing commences tonight with the juniors kicking off at 6.30 pm for the
juniors. Don’t forget to register for the Wagga RSL Junior carnival to be held
on the 12th and 13th of February. Another date to put in your diary is the first
Tuesday of each month. The club meeting is held on this day at the Rules Club at
7.30 pm. Come and have a say in the running of your club.
26 Jan 2005
The second
club racing night for the year was extremely successful with 55 riders
registering for racing. In perfect conditions, the racing was of a high standard
with a number of newcomers trying out track racing. Wagga Wagga riders also
travelled the countryside over the weekend in the build up to the State track
cycling championships. While the juniors were beavering away, Jess Hume was busy
at the Dunc Gray velodrome competing at the Youth Olympics.
Last Wednesday, the Auto Panel Repairs Pocket Rockets numbers were boosted by
the debut of Apryll Green on the track. Apryll made a fantastic debut with 2
wins and a third in her 3 handicap races. Angus South was the other winner with
William Basset, Virginia Carroll and Charlie Hamilton taking out places.
The Fearnes Coaches U11B races had good numbers with 6 riders competing.
Johnathon Carroll made a clean sweep with 3 wins. Placings were shared between
Kate Bassett, Tristan Carruthers, Sam South, Liam Moston and Greg Westerman who
has done well to be promoted from the Pocket Rockets.
The Rules Club U 11A’s were full to the brim with 9 riders racing. Andrew Ham
also made his debut on the track in a tough field of wiley foxes. Sam Shaw and
the ‘Coolamon Bulldog’ James English had wins while placings were shared by
Sarah English, Maxy Pearse, Erin Doyle, Brooke Michalowski, Alex Ross and Andrew
Shaw.
The U13s rode extremely well with Joe van Wel, Jonno Ham, Isaac Gilmore and
Matty Garlan sharing the winnings. Jonno must have crossed a black cat, walked
under a ladder and forgotten his rabbit’s foot on his way to the track. Other
than losing his chain in a race, breaking a shoe and his mother locking the keys
in the car, I don’t think an y more could have gone wrong.
The U15s were very competitive with Netasha Pearse, and Bryce Leske sharing the
winnings. Places were filled by Tara Bryan, Ellen Marks and Jamie Green. They
then rode up with the seniors in the scratch race and acquitted themselves
brilliantly in the 14 lap race.
The seniors had some good racing with Nathan Kelly winning the 2 lap handicap
from Paul Fellows and Nigel Irvine. The 5 lap handicap was won by Paul Fellwos
with Nigel Irvine a close 2nd and Nathan Kelly third. In the combined scratch
race, Nathan Kelly was the winner with Paul Fellows 2nd and Billy Robertson
third.
In great news for the club Jess Hume was selected to represent Australia at the
Youth Olympics. ‘Grasshopper’ finished 7th in the sprint Derby and then went on
to win a silver medal in the pointscore race. A magnificent effort against
riders from Japan, South Africa, Malaysia, New Zealand, China and more.
Wagga riders also travelled to Wangaratta for the Sports Carnival and Junior
Carnival. In the seniors, Dean Hart and Nigel Irvine toiled hard in the heat. In
the junior races Maxy Pearse, Jamie Green, Blocker Pearse, Tara Bryan, Nomie
Pinto, Ellen Marks and Netasha Pearse all had excellent results bringing back a
bucket of Victorian prizemoney.
The duathlon was contested by 4 riders with Mark Wilson winning the event from
Blue Watt. In a tie for third, Geoff Breeze and Bryce Leske’ s major sponsor Tim
Leske, were hard to separate. The Tolland Race was down in numbers due to many
of the riders being away at Wangaratta. The runaway winner was Dirk Roshier with
David Ham second and Dougald Powell third.
Racing commences tonight with the juniors kicking off at 6.30 pm. Don’t forget
to register for the Wagga RSL Junior carnival to be held on the 12th and 13th of
February. Another date to put in your diary is the first Tuesday of each month.
The club meeting is held on this day at the Rules Club at 7.30 pm. Come and have
a say in the running of your club.
19 Jan 2005
An excellent
turnout of riders for the first Wagga Wagga Cycling Club track meeting of the
year points to a big season ahead of us. Whilst everyone took a well-earned rest
after travelling over the X-mas New Year break Richard Moffatt contested the
National Championships with great success in Adelaide..
Last week, Wagga’s Richard Moffatt contested the National U23 Time Trial
Championship over 40km in the Adelaide Hills. He put in a fantastic effort in
the heat to win a silver medal. Not bad considering Richard still has another
year in this age group.
Locally, the Auto Panel Repairs Pocket Rockets had some excellent racing over
three handicap events. The honours were shared between William Bassett, Charlie
Hamilton, Jessica Marshall and Angus South. It is wonderful to see these young
riders enjoying their riding as well as developing some great skills.
The Fearnes Coaches U11B saw 6 riders register for racing. Sam South and Greg
Westerman had wins whilst placings were shared between Kate Bassett, Tristan
Carruthers, Joe Hindmarsh and Tommy Hindmarsh. The Rules Club U11A also had some
good racing between 6 riders. James English with his new nickmane ‘Bulldog’ and
Maxy Pearse had wins with placings going to Sarah English, Max Housden Sam Shaw
and Alex Ross.
The riders who featured in the U13 races were Isaac Gilmore, Matty Garlan, Tommy
Hindmarsh and Baden Housden. All these young riders are starting to show the
benefits of some extra road training over the holiday period. The U15 and U17
riders combined with honours being shared between Ellen Marks, Elyce Payne and
Jamie Green. Placings went to Netasha Pearse, Rachel Gilmore, Blocker Pearse,
Mitchell Harvey and Matty Garlan riding up an age group for the scratch race.
The senior program kicked off with a series of sprint derby races. It was good
to see the club’s newest member Johnno Andreaou having success on his first
night of track racing. The 2 lap handicap was won by Luke Harvey followed by
Nathan Kelly and Billy Robertson. The 5 lap handicap was won by Johnno Andreaou
followed by Natahn Kelly and Mick Marshall. The B Grade 10 lap scratch race was
won by Steve Marks fresh from his success at Goulburn. He was followed by his
little girl Ellen and then Netasha Pearse. The A Grade 15 lap scratch race was
won by Nathan Kelly from Billy Robertson and Nigel Irvine.
The Duathlon handicap race was contested by 3 riders. Nicola Wunderlich. Hilton
Williams and Jeramiah. The winner was Nicola Wunderlich, closely followed by
Hilton Williams and Jeremiah. The Sunday Tolland Club Race was dominated by
Wagga Wagga Cycling Club riders. The race was won by Nigel Irvine riding from
scratch with the big Swede (not the vegetable) Lars second and Jess Hume third.
Also riding from the mark of honour was Steve Marks who, after winning a
championship gold medal and being given a scratch mark has now made it in the
cycling world.
Racing commences tonight with the juniors kicking off at 6.30 pm. Be early to
register and ensure the you have a current licence. The licencing secretary
Steven Marks will be available to issue 2005 licences. Training will recommence
every Monday afternoon at 4.30 pm. Every Saturday morning Coach Bob Robertson
will be holding training for those riders heading to Sydney and Dubbo for the
State Track Championships in February and March. Don’t forget to register with
Cycling NSW for the RSL Juniot Carnival (U17 down) on Feb 12 & 13.
12 Jan 2005
Happy New Year
to all you cycling buffs out there. While those with a bit of sense were taking
it easy on holidays, the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club’s riders travelled south into
Victoria’s Golden Triangle in search of some of the riches on offer on the
Victorian Christmas Circuit. Last week, riders also headed to Melbourne and
Goulburn for some more competition in the lead up to the State track Cycling
Championships.
The Wagga Waggag Cycling Club was well represented on the Victorian Christmas
Circuit. The riders who travelled south were Max, Brodie and Netasha Pearse,
Elyce Payne, Ellen Marks, Paul Fellows, Dirk Roshier, Nomie Pinto and Jess Hume.
All riders did very well with Ellen Marks and Netasha Pearse winning Wheelraces
in Echuca and Shepparton respectively. In the Bay Criterium Series held in
Melbourne, Netasha Pearse took out a 2nd place in the Junior Girls’ race.
The Wagga Wagga Cycling Club was well represented at the Goulburn Trackpower
Open and the Southern Division championships held last weekend. The Trackpower
open saw the Wagga Riders win a bucket full of cash with Max and Baden Housden,
Johnathon Carroll, William Carroll, Blocker and Max Pearse, Isaac and Rachel
Gilmore, James English, Johnno Ham, Bryce Leske, Nomie Pinto, Elyce Payne,
Rachel Gilmore, Ellen Marks, Paul Fellows, Nigel Irvine and Rob Housden riding
well all night. Thankfully, conditions were slightly cooler than those
encountered in past years. Bryce Leske had some classic tussles with Illawarra’s
Scott Law and I think Bryce took the points over the weekend.
While the Southern Highlands club took the Joan Knight Trophy, the Wagga Wagga
Cycling Club won numerous medals over the weekend. The memorable performance was
that of Steve Marks to win the gold medal in the Vets Sprint Derby. Gold medals
were won by James English, Johnathon Carroll, Nomie Pinto, Paul Fellows, Nathan
Kelly, Blocker Pearse and Ellen Marks. Other medal winners were William Carroll,
Max Pearse, Jonno Ham, Max and Baden Housden, Isaac Gilmore, Dirk Roshier, Elyce
Payne, Rachel Gilmore and Rob Housden.
