Marshalling up success at Tassie track carnivals?

The Marshall family have tasted early success at the Devonport Track carnival in Tasmania.  Still racing in Wagga colours, Jess took 1st place and Zach 3rd in the 1000m handicap race. An awesome result.  Zach also placed 3rd in the U13 1000m scratch race.

On the same day Paul Fellows came 2nd in the 1000m Handicap race from a 45m mark and the following day, riding in the NSW team, Paul took 1st place in the Teams Sprint

see photo of Jess and Zach on the podium at redbackdesigns.com.au here

The 2nd night of the Devonport carnival brought a 2nd place for Mick Marshall in the E grade scratch race (must be E for Engine). Zach then placed 3rd in the U13 1000 handicap and Jess took 3rd place in the U13 scratch race.

How to get more people racing in 2009?

We all know that cycling is pretty popular in Wagga at the moment. We get big turn outs to social rides like the stubby ride, the Tuesday and Thursday bunch rides, the Wagga Christmas ride where all the bike groups come together for a ride and the Saturday morning Kidson's ride. So how can we convert some of this popularity into more racers in our club road racing and how can we make sure that the club's 2009 road racing season is popular?

To have a voice please have a look at the forum found here and have your say.  You don't have to be a Wagga cycle club member to have an opinion. Any comments are much appreciated.  You can make up your own user name on the forum if you want to remain anonymous and mysterious.

NSW State Championships

The Wagga Cycle Club sprint teams unleashed their power and precision at the State Championships held last weekend.  Wagga won gold in the U17 teams sprint (750m) with Tom Regan, Jeremy Scott and Matt Garlan showing their class with a time of 54.183 seconds after qualifying fastest with a time of 54.854. The U15 team which comprised of Lucy Regan, Max Pearse and Max Housden, took silver in their team sprint (750m), missing first pace by less than 0.1 of a second with a time of 56.958 seconds.  Lucy Regan also had success in the JW15 scratch race where she placed 3rd. Tom Regan came 4th in the U17 scratch race where Jeremy Scott and Matt Garlan also made the final.

The individual talent also showed through with local track stars, Paul Fellows and Jamie Green showing great form. Paul took 2nd in the Sprint and 3rd in the Keirin for the Elite men. Jamie won gold in the U19 Sprint, bronze in the U19 1km time trial with a time of 1.10 and placed 4th in the Keirin

Congratulations to all riders on a great effort in representing the club and doing us proud.

Tour of Bright

Local riders Ash Humbert, Simon Haworth and Brodie Pearce competed in the Tour of Bright last weekend in A, B and C grades, respectively.  Great weather and a tough course confronted the riders. Ashley’s team won A grade. Simon came 52nd out of 62 starters, at one stage breaking away with more than a minute gap until the field caught him 100m before the KOM. Simon ended the tour with a time 13 minutes better than his result last year. Brodie finished 41st out of 81 starters in C grade.  A great effort all round. There is talk of a larger WWCC contingent for the 2009 event with Craig Williams and Carl Henman already seen on secret mid week training rides.

Weekend racing results:

After a successful days racing Zac Marshall was crowned under 11 NSW Country Champion whilst his dad, Mick, took sliver in the Masters 4 category. Congratulations Marshalls.

The Wagga to Albury race was held in excellent conditions with a field of more than 80 riders. The race started to take its toll after Culcairn where Brodie Pearse called it a day. Jim Hogan pulled out of the limit bunch near Walla and Nigel Irvine got dropped on the other side of Walla.  Block caught the C graders before Jindera just minutes before scratch joined the main peloton. With 25km to go, Craig Williams and Jason Condon where members of a group of C graders that were dropped from the back of the pack. Rohan Taylor and Simon Haworth rode a good race in B grade staying with the main field to the line. Graham Springett had a great race and was still riding strong when the peloton caught the limit bunch and managed to stay with the leading pack until the last climb of the day. Best local rider was Ashley Humbert taking 3rd place.

Chris Mumme had a blinder at the Shepparton half ironman - coming 1st in the swim (over the entire field) and 8th in the ride in his age group. Chris finished up 4th in his age group for the half ironman, an excellent result. Lionel Harmer had a great Swim and ride sitting in 4th place in his age group at the start of the run leg. Lionel ended up 38th in his age group after a hard run (is there another kind???).  The half ironman would be a great event once they drop the run and maybe the swim legs.

Wagga Club members in a big weekend of racing

This Sunday a number of Wagga riders will compete in the Wagga to Albury road race. The race route travels from Wagga to Mangoplah, Cookardinia, Morven, Culcairn, Walla Walla, Jindera, finishing in Lavington.  Race distance covers 130km. Wagga Cycle club riders competing include: Simon Haworth, Rohan Taylor, Brodie Pearse, Craig Williams, Jason Condon, Graham Springett, Nigel Irvine and Jim Hogan.

The race starts from the Tolland Hotel car park 10am on Sunday. So come down to see the field as the riders start off.

The thought of racing to Albury was too much for Lionel Harmer. He withdrew from the race to take on something less strenuous - the Shepparton half ironman. New club member Chris Mumme is also racing in Shepp on Sunday. All the best to you and the other Wagga tri guys making the journey.

Also on Sunday, the NSW Country Track Championships will be held at Gosford. Mick, Zac and Jess Marshall, Saxon Hodges, Greg Westerman, Josh and Emma Apolony and Matt Garlan are travelling over to represent the club in a field of 118 competitors. I'm sure the Wagga talent will bring some medals home. We wish the young riders and Mick well.

Good luck everyone, have a great weekend of racing, stay upright and have fun.

Golden wheel Carnival

Results for the two days racing of the Golden Wheel Carnival have been posted here

Scott Law took out the Golden Wheel Wheelrace ahead of James Langedyk and Aaron Donnelly.  Wagga riders did well over the weekend with Paul Fellows taking the honours in the A grade Kieren. Jamie Green had a great weekend cleaning up in the B grade scratch race, the kieren and 2 lap handicap race. Josh Apolony took 1st place in the U17 men wheelrace just ahead of Matt Garlan. Max Housden and Max Pearse came home 2nd and 3rd in the U15 men wheelrace whilst Lucy Reagan and Emma Apolony took 1st and 2nd place of the U15 women wheelrace.

The U13 Combined wheelrace was won by Dominica Funnell ahead of Emily Bruce and Jessica Marshall. The U9 and U11 wheelrace was won by Jessica Tracey ahead of Bede Funnell and Connor Higgins.

The only mishap of the carnival was a crash involving Steve Marks during the C grade 2 lap handicap race on Saturday.  Steve couldn't avoid an incident ahead of him and came down hard on his shoulder with a few minor scuffs here and there. Unfortunately his bike was much worse off. We hope you are on the mend Steve and the shoulder comes good fast.  RIP the red Trek.

A big thanks to all the helpers, gate keepers, canteen workers, commissaires, judges, handlers, riders and sponsors who all made the carnival such a success.

Tour of Two Rivers Results

The final stage of the 2008 Tour of Two Rivers was raced at Coolamon on Sunday.  Wagga Cycle Club riders had a good day out with Simon Haworth taking 1st in A grade and Brodie Pearse 3rd.  This gave Simon 2nd in the A grade general classification, only nine points behind Ashley Humbert. Brodie took 5th place in GC and was winner of the A grade KOM.

In B grade, Steve Marks, Pete Johnson and Carl Henman all did a mountain of work during the race trying to get Jason Condon across the line with the number 1 position in GC. It wasn't to be as Jason Condon narrowly missing 3rd place in the race to Shaun Stuart of Cootamundra. Giving Phil Twigg of Griffith 1st Place in B Grade for the Tour - eventually - as initially Jason was awarded 1st place, issued the cash and the sash, photos and fame before the count back was reviewed and Phil was crowned a deserving winner.  On the positive side, Jason now knows what it feels like to win B grade in an interclub tour even if he didn't.

Wagga riders took out 1st and 2nd in the C grade race with Josh Appolony taking the win closely followed by new club member Chris Mumme.  Josh has dominated the GC in C grade all Tour and took the title by a massive 14 points clear of Matt Lees of Albury/Wodonga. Josh also took out the C grade KOM for the Tour.  In a sign of things to come, Chris Mumme was awarded 3rd place in C grade GC - a great result considering he only took up racing at stage 3.

The race for D grade GC came down to the wire with Isaac Gilmore taking 2nd in the race followed by Jeremy Scott in 3rd. Isaac's competition for the GC crown, Russell Web of Griffith, came 7th doing just enough to finish 1st in D grade in GC, only one point ahead of Isaac in 2nd place.

Well done to all Wagga riders who participated in the Tour, those who got race and GC places and those who did a lot of work for fellow club members in each grade.  Big thanks to Simon Haworth and each of the 5 clubs for organising the Tour of Two Rivers. We are looking forward to next year already.

Megan Dunn from Dubbo has also shown some real grit winning the Women's Scratch race. For those that don't know Megan had a big crash at the Cootamundra Haycarters races only weeks before the World Championships. She spent the night in hospital with some very nasty facial injuries.

Photo's

I have been given a heap of photo's to display from the McDonald's Classic weekend. I will endeavor to get them up over the next couple of days.

McDonalds Classic

The McDonald's Classic has been a huge success. Rohan Taylor was the first local home on Saturday followed closely by Craig Williams. Wagga CC member Graham Springett won the E Grade Crit and Lionel Harmer placed fourth in the D grade Crit. To Lionel's credit, he gave his $200 prize money to Track World Championship bound Paul Fellows, as you good imagine Paul was delighted. Damien Semmler was the big winner on the Sunday, winning the B Grade Crit and then the $5000 carbon Cervelo Soloist from Kidson Cycles.

The weekend was given a huge rap by all that attended and it appears that everybody is coming back next year. Hang on, may be the guy that would not get in the sad wagon and was found some hours later , in the dark near the race course on the west of Wagga might not be coming back ( Race finished at  around 3.30pm and it gets dark at about 5.30pm). Hopefully he does and he has learn't a valuable lesson. All the results can be found on the McDonalds Classic page on the left hand side under the photo of Luke Davison.

Note:# A chance to make someone smile, Just about all of the racing we do is only made possible by tireless volunteers, in passing, a simple thank you for your time will make it all seem worth while for them.

A Message from the Club Secretary

Haycarters Weekend

Wagga CC member Jason Condon has placed 4th in Saturday's Cootaumdra Haycarters handicap. Wagga were well represented in the finish, with Rohan Taylor, Lionel Harmer, Mick Fitzgerald and Craig Williams all in the hunt for the win. Craig finished off a good ride with 12th place and Lionel had his run cut short when a rider in front of him dropped his chain and he lost momentum. Rohan was worn out from the chase and rolled across the line in the middle of the sprinting group happy with his efforts. Rohan's bunch only made contact with the front of the race in the last couple of kilometres to the finish. Simon Haworth was involved in a crash just prior to the second climb of the day when 3 or 4 riders fell in front of him and his day was finished as his bunch rode off into the distance.

Lionel and Jason rode on the Sunday and made it to the finish but were out gunned by the fasters guys from behind and the fact that there were 60-70 riders in the finish, safety first.

Crashed

The Fellow's camp was sent into a spin last night when Paul crashed in the warm-up prior to Wednesday nights Track racing. I believe that everyone is all right. Paul would be nervous about injuries in the lead up to his trip to the Junior World track Titles and any unexpected crashes would not be welcome. The Club wish him well!

The McDonalds Classic weekend is going to be huge and will require a lot of man power. Please give Sonia Marshall a call on 0428 116038 to find out what small job you can do to help.

Some McDonalds Classic details have been released and it's anticipated that $20000 will be up for grabs over the weekend, $12000 for the 116km handicap on the Saturday and then another $8000 to split across 5 Grades. Up Up and Away

Paul Fellows has been named as part of the Junior World's team to contest the 2008 Junior Track World Championships in South Africa. Check out the Cyclingnews story. I believe Paul is the first Wagga CC member to attend a Track World Championship. Ashley Humbert and Richard Moffatt have both been to the Junior Road World Championships previously. Paul is riding a wave at the moment, as he was made a  school Prefect at Mater Dei recently.

Geelong Women's Tour

Canberra Tour

Canberra CC President, John May released the following statement on their website yesterday:

It is with considerable regret that I have to announce that the Canberra Tour will not take place in 2008. Unfortunately we have been unable to find a race director, and there is now not enough time left to organise the event. This is doubly regrettable given the outstanding success of last year's event, which was our best ever. The Canberra Cycling Club apologises for this disappointment, and we trust that it is not too late too re-direct your training efforts to other events. We look forward to being back, bigger and better, in 2009.

Canberra Tour

A story is circulating at present that the Canberra Tour may not go ahead this year. Canberra recently announced that the event has been put back 2 weeks and was going to be held on the much loved Haycarters weekend of racing. As a result of the date change, Cycling Australia stripped the Canberra Tour of it's place in the Roadman of the Year series and took away the National U/19 selection race. The issues are that organisers from last years event are facing litigation over the accident in the Womens B grade event where a couple of women were seriously injured after there was a touch of wheels in the bunch resulting in an accident and riders ending up on the wrong side of the road directly in front of an on coming car. The Canberra CC are having difficulty in finding a person willing to be a Race Director for the Canberra Tour due to the alleged litigation.

Cootamundra CC where not aware of the changes, so there may be a change to their dates. I'll keep you posted. National MTB Champs

Simon Haworth is going to go and have a crack at the Masters Men MTB National Champs to be held in Canberra this weekend.

Alpine Classic

A large contingent of Wagga riders are heading down to Bright this weekend to participate in the spectacle known as the Alpine Classic. Most riders are having a go at the 200km course and some are hoping to cover the course in under 8 hours. Dan Uden said he doesn't care what time he rides as long as he finishes in front of Adrian "Hammo" Hamilton. Hammo has been training had up to the event and has even forgone the MTB Nationals to see Dan eat his dust. May everyone have a safe weekend.

Purpose Built Criteium Track

Barry O'Hagan has been exploring with Wagga City Council the possibility of having a Criterium Circuit for cyclists to use. Barry has been meet with some resistance by Council.

A Criterium Track in Wagga would certainly be a welcome addition to the sporting facilities in Wagga, especially with the growth that cycling has experienced in the  Riverina in recent years. A Criterium circuit would certainly enhance Wagga Wagga's ability to host a number of Championship events and be able to offer another race that will not interfere with general road raffic that may be diverted due to Crit's being held on a street circuit. A Crit circuit would also reduce the amount of resources now needed to run a race on an open road with cars and greatly improve the safety of all involved. A Criterium course would also provide a year round safe area for riders as young as 5 to compete in a controlled safe environment.

The question must be asked why the Council is offering resistance to the project when you consider how much money was spent on the Oasis Swimming Complex, 16 Million. I have conducted a couple of Google searches and I have not been able to locate any text with regards to swimmers achievements in Wagga. I have had a look at Wagga Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame and the only inductee having a direct link to swimming is Warren Miller. Warren competed in the  modern pentathlon, which involved a swimming element. There is no one inductee directly related to swimming. You could say that the two Triathlon inductee's would be linked to swimming, which include Commonwealth Gold medalist Brad Kahlefeldt. Both are also linked to cycling and Brad certainly developed his bike riding via cycle racing in the Riverina. 5 inductee's are directly related to cycling, with Joshua Collingwood topping the list. Josh won and Under 19 World Championship and set a new world record. Anyone who knows a little about cycling in Europe would know that a World Championship win on the road at any level is like the Holy Grail of cycling. The amount of Juniors that have achieved results at State and National level are two numerous to mention. However, I do remember a time when Wagga Wagga Cycle Club had 5 riders selected for the NSW Junior Team to represent NSW at the Nationals. Don't get me wrong I am not trying to belittle swimmers I am just highlighting the fact that 16 Million has been spent on a swimming facility for a small minority, all we require is $100000.00. I think that we could even do a satisfactory job for $50000.00.

If you have the chance to get into some bodies ear about the issue then please do!

Tour De Riverina

It's time to get your team together for the Tour De Riverina. You need 4 riders all up, they can be from anywhere in the handicap field as long as the riders are all from the same club. The Team total works on a points system. So you do not need to be the best rider/riders in the field. If all four riders turn up to each race then you are in with a great chance of taking out the Teams category. If some of your team members run in the top 10 along the way then their points add to the team total moving you up the leader board.

Saturday Morning Ride

It was great to see another excellent turn out of riders for Saturday morning coffee dash. The wind was strong on the way out but all were excited at the prospect of having a strong tail wind home. The peleton looked impressive as it snaked along and even more so when Tony Alchinger, wearing his Mac's kit was followed directly behind by several others wearing the Mac's cycling kit. Chambo said that it looked like a big Mac being followed by some cheese burgers. The new format of the fast guys going first seems to be working well with a lot of riders taking the challenge of riding in the faster groups, with the knowledge that if it gets a bit to tough they can drop back to a slower group. Ashley Humbert had all but Peter Treloar and Ian Gunn thinking of dropping back to the slower group. Ashley was doing his best motorbike impression and had the group strung out doing speeds in the high 50km/hr bracket on the flat sections, man he is a rocket! Petrina Quinn made a return to the Saturday Morning ride after her fall late last year and Kelly William's finally found her big chain ring and made it back with her bunch for the first time, she's happy. Another impressive ride was by Blocker Pearse. Blocker managed to hang on with the big Guns riding at an average speed of 48km/hr on his junior restricted gears, impressive! Steve Gavel was the lucky winner of the McDonald's cycling kit this week. All you need to do to be in the running for the Mac's cycling kit is turn up and ride on Saturday morning with the group and make your way back to the coffee shop for the draw. We keep drawing names until we get a person at the draw, we like to see the smile on the face of the winner. All we ask is that riders make a donation into the kids cottage money box at the Trail St Coffee Roasters.

Saturday Morning Ride

Great weather and favorable winds greeted the large group of riders on Saturday morning. Commonwealth Games Champion, Brad Kahlefelt riding his National Champion coloured (Green & Gold) Giant TCR Advance came out and joined the group. The bunch broke into 4 groups this week with the fast boys and girls going first again. A pot hole halfway along Patterson's Road claimed a couple of scalps. Simon punchered his rear and Shane McMullen punchered his front and rear tyres. Everyone seems to be enjoying the new format and if you are not then please let Simon or Lionel know. Graham Springett was this weeks lucky winner of the McDonald's cycling kit.
