The end of 2009 is almost here
It has been a big year for the club.  We held a bunch of successful events. The two track carnivals, The Golden Wheel and Masters/Juniors Carnivals, went smoothly as did the Junior tour . We saw the introduction of the Morgan St Cycles Handicap Point Score Series bring some excitement back to club racing. The McDonald's Classic continues to grow in size and reputation.

Much success has been had by Wagga Cycle club riders through out the year on road and track, at local and state level - a credit to the coaches and riders of the club.

But not all of 2009 has been good. Stuart Hume has had tough second half of the year recovering from injury - all the best for 2010 Stu keep up the hard work. We also said good bye to Luke Garlan, a great friend of the club and one who is missed greatly.

Thanks to the sponsors, club committee, officials, Mums and Dads, volunteers and riders who made racing possible and cycling an enjoyable sport in 2009.

Here's wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Don't forget there is a Christmas ride leaving the Plumpton Rd/Red Hill Rd roundabout at 5:30am Thursday, Christmas Eve - a tradition worth carrying on as it is a chance to catch up with friends and some old racers. Bring a drink - it gets hot at 5:30.
All the best for 2010.

Eamon Ryan Makes C Grade Podium in Bright Tour

The trip to Bright to race the Tour of Bright was well worth the effort for Eamon Ryan who came third in C grade just 1 min 20sec behind the winner. Well done - a great ride.  Andrew Bruce came home in 51th place in C Grade but took 3rd in Stage 2 - the ITT. Dan Uden failed to finish the 1st stage after stopping for a nature break but was unable to get back on to the bunch.

In the Masters 1,2,3 Grade Jason Condon finished in 46th, Simon Haworth in 66th and Graham Springett in 91st place.  Michael Schmid came 70th in the Masters 4,5 category.

Kelly Linden was the only female from Wagga to make the journey to Bright and was disappointed when coming down with an illness on the first day of the tour.

Full results can be found here

It was a great weekend, fantastic event and really well run.  Well worth considering for 2010 if you like great scenery and riding hills

Track racing report   by Greg Scott

Summer track racing last Wednesday evening was met with perfect weather conditions, making for an exciting evening’s racing.  In the Pocket Rockets, Rebel Brooker continued to dominate by winning both handicap races from Charlie Wykes.  The scratch race was a family affair, with Finn Johnson wining over his sister Niamh.  Georgia Macauly continues to improve each week, winning the Under 11 B Grade 1 lap handicap race, followed closely by Tom Guertson.   Andreas Shepherd won the U11 2 lap handicap from the ever-smiling Noah Bruce and the scratch race from Georgia Macauley.  U11A Grade 1 lap handicap was won by Rhys Pretious, with the 2 lap handicap won by Victoria Makin and the scratch race by Saxby Harrison.  The Under 13’s racing was close, with Bailey Ellis winning both the 2 lap and 3 lap handicap races from Andrea Glass and Beth Rees respectively.  Lachlan Scott took home line honours in the scratch race from Beth Rees and Andrea Glass. In the mixed U13/U15 races, Greg Westerman continued his fine form to win the 4 lap handicap over Jack Boulton and Cameron Scott, while Andrew Geurtson won the 2 lap handicap from Saxon Hodges and the scratch race form Emily Bruce.

Senior numbers were down somewhat, no doubt due to end-of-year school formals.  The C Grade 8 lap heart starter was the largest field, and was won by Jim Krebs.  Greg Scott just held off a charging Peta Stewart and David Glass to win the B Grade heart starter.  A Grade was won by sprinter Jamie Green from Matt Garlan and Brodie Pearse.  Green also sneaked through congested finishing straight to win race 1 of the 2 lap handicap from Peta Stewart and Darren Harrison.  Race 2 was won by Narrandera rider Grace Rees, with Greg hodges and Isaac Gilmore filling the minor placings.  The 5 lap all-in handicap proved to be an exciting race, with Brodie Pearse just managing to squeeze through for the win over Jamie Green and Ashley Humbert.  Young sprinter Max Housden showed that he also has some endurance by winning the combined B and C Grade scratch race, while the A Grade Scratch race was won by Jamie Green.

Racing continues tonight at the Wagga Wagga Cricket Ground cycling track in Kincaid Street, with junior racing commencing at 6:30pm and senior racing at 7:30pm. The last night of racing for 2009 will be on Wednesday 16 December.  A reminder to those riders wishing to compete in the Southern Division Track Championships in Goulburn on January 10, 2010 to notify and pay Beth Gilmore by Wednesday 9 December.

Wagga riders do well at Bellbridge Stage 3 of the Tour of Two Rivers

Josh Kennedy took out B grade showing the great form he has developed this year after he was part of a two man breakaway. New dad Brad Carroll came home in 3rd place ahead of the remaining pack. Earlier in the week Brad and wife Kate welcomed their first child, Hunter into the world, so the 3rd place capped off a special week for Brad.  Carl Henman took the KOM honours after an early solo breakaway and ended the race in 6th place ahead of Andrew Bruce 7th, Eamon Ryan 9th and Pete Johnson 10th.

Dominic Shepherd, Michael Schimd and Dave Glass filled the D grade podium (1,2,3, respectively) in a show of Wagga force. Andrew Smith came 6th just ahead of Steve Taylor 7th, Marvin Glass 9th and Charlie Westerman 10th.  David Glass also took out the KOM.

Dan Uden was the best of the Wagga A graders coming home in 5th place.

The next stage is Saturday the 24th of Oct at Cootamundra. See the Tour of Two Rivers  Webpage for more details and entry.

As a recovery ride you may consider the Wagga Mountain bike race on Sunday the 25th Oct- see here for more details.

Final Race of the Morgan St Cycles Series in just a few days time

The last race of the 2009 Morgan St Cycle series will be held on Saturday the 17th at 2pm at Uranquinty.

The overall series leader, Rohan Taylor, just has to finish ahead of the riders in the scratch bunch to take the title and the ochre jersey but a DNF could see the title handed to either Simon Haworth or Jason Condon.

The Rookie series, which comprises 12 riders, will go down to the line with Dominic Shepherd holding a 5 point lead over Eamon Ryan.

The womens championship is wrapped up with Kelly Linden taking the honours and she has headed to Melbourne to compete in the Honda Hybrid Women’s Tour which runs with the 2009 Jayco Herald Sun Tour. We wish Kelly all the best.

The end of the series will be celebrated with a dinner at the Quinty Hotel and the presentation of the championship jerseys, prizes.  We have more than 40 people coming along and there are still a few places left so come down and join us all at the dinner - served from 6:30 onwards.  A great opportunity to relax with friends of a common interest.

Wagga riders take home the cash in Stage 1 of Tour of Two Rivers
In warm windy conditions met the 16 Wagga riders that competed in the Bertoldo Spring Classic hosted by Griffith CC on Saturday 12 Sep.  The 60km graded scratch races provided great racing with some spirited rides had by some Wagga members.

Simon Haworth won A grade after a breakaway at the KOM which was won by Dan Uden.  Dan managed 2nd place ahead of Brodie Pearse in 3rd. A great result for Wagga there.

B grade also showed the class of the Wagga riders with Brad Carroll taking 1st place ahead of Pete Johnson and Josh Kennedy. Brad also took the KOM for B grade.

Isaac Gilmore came 3rd in C grade whilst Dominic Shepherd carried his Morgan St Cycles series form to Griffith to take the win and the KOM in D grade with Tony Aichinger crossing the line in 3rd place.

Stage Two of the Tour of Two Rivers
Stage two of the Tour of Two Rivers is an individual time trial that will be hosted by the Wagga club at the Uranquinty course. Racing starts at 12 noon so get there with plenty of time before that for warm up. Entry cost is $15.

Riders will be released at 30 second intervals. A and B grade will complete a 28km course, C and D grade will ride a 16km course.

This time trial counts for points in the Tour of Two Rivers, the Riverina Championships, and the Wagga Cycle club Championship.  (3 birds with one stone!)

Immediately following the ITT the club will be holding graded scratch races that count towards the Club Championships. Visiting riders from other clubs are welcome to compete - Entry cost is $5.  Riders will race for sweepstake.  This race is also a part of the Wagga club championship - so first Wagga rider home will take the points for that.

Presentations will be held at the Quinty pub where the club will put on a free sausage sizzle for all riders.

Please enter on line at the Tour of Two Rivers Website

Track season is approaching
As of Monday 5th October the track lights will be on until 8.30pm for any seniors wishing to train after the juniors have finish their training at 6.30pm.   The first night of track racing will be held on the 14th Oct.

Junior training has started already. Any juniors interested in having a ride can talk to Bob Robertson at the track from 4:30pm on Monday afternoons.  The club has bikes that the kids can borrow so lack of a bike is no excuse for not getting you child into a wonderful family sport.

Wagga Cycling Club AGM
The AGM will be held on Tuesday the 29th September at the Rules Club in Fernleigh Rd starting at 7pm.  Come along and have an input into the club.

Southern Division races for 2010 - claim the date
Next years Southern Divisions dates are Sunday 10th January track and Sunday 28th March road.  These are great events worthy of your support, the more club members we have racing the better we do so mark those dates in the calendar and get training.

Are you a whiz on the BBQ?
The club raises money by selling bacon and egg sangers at the Wagga Farmers Market. We are looking for helpers  so if you can help out in a group or even get a group together that would be great.  You would only need to give up a Saturday morning 2 times during the year.  Please let Beth know.

Round 6 Morgan St cycle series - a cracker of a race
In what has been described as the best race in years of club racing, the handicapper did a great job and had 16 of the 25 riders finishing within 20 seconds of each other after all the bunches came together in the last 250m.

A gentle breeze made the going tough from time to time and probably helped scratch and block close some of the gap to the earlier bunches who were riding smart and staying together. Scratch and block came together not far before the last turn with 4 more than minutes to the limit riders. The way the scratch and block bunch worked together can only be described as a thing of beauty with all riders working together, doing their turns smoothly and the resulting speed of the group was thrilling and soon had the bunch in visual contact with the groups up the road.  With 2 km to go the limit bunch starting riding tactically for the finish, the chasing bunches were not able to be seen due to a kink in the road.

Towards the last rise on the left hand bend before the finishing straight, the chasing bunch was still 200m off the back of the bunch ahead, it was at this point that Dan Uden gave everything for the bunch and closed the gap down to about 50m where Simon Haworth took over and brought the bunches together on the straight.

In what was a the largest mass sprint for the line in years of club racing, Rohan Taylor took first and fastest (averaging 40km/h) followed by Jason Condon and Simon Haworth. Matt Garlan was a close 4th after riding a strong race from block. Brad Carroll was 5th home just ahead of Craig Williams making Brad the first Rookie home. Petrina Quinn was first female home. See the sprint here on youtube

Tiny Hart Award
With so many gutsy efforts demonstrated during the race it will be hard for riders to nominate the rider they considered to have be the hardest worker, the most impressive ride, the person who gave it all for the bunch, for the Tiny Hart Award.  Please make sure you nominate a rider for this prestigious, riders choice, award.

Series Points
The points for the series can be seen on the Morgan St cycles series page. Rohan Taylor has taken a commanding lead in the overall series points score. Kelly Linden holds a unbeatable lead over her rivals in the female category but the Rookie series remains alive with only 5 points separating Dominic Shepherd from Eamon Ryan - that is one category that will do down to the final race of the series which will be held Saturday the 17th Oct.

A huge thank you to Steve and Jeff Marks, Paula Housden, Luke and Sue Garlan, Beth Gilmore, Patty Robertson, Greg Hodges, Neil Pinto, Dave Mann, Jamie Ruddy and all the other helpers that made the racing possible.

Series prize presentation
The series prizes will be presented on the night of the final race (17th Oct) at a dinner at the Uranquinty Hotel.  Please bring you family along or arrange for them to travel down to Uranquinty that evening (kicking off after the race - dinner around 6:30) to join the in the friendly social atmosphere, meet your fellow riders and share the celebration of a great series, the racing and the fun we had.  Please RSVP to Jason with your numbers for the night before the 26th Sept.  It would be great if all the riders, officials, helpers and families could attend and help make it a great night. The Uranquinty pub have sponsored race prizes each race so it will be great to show our appreciation by packing the place out on Saturday the 17th Oct.

National Junior Road Titles
Good luck to Jeremy Scott and Matt Garlan who travel to Canberra on the weekend to compete in the National Road Championships.  Both riders rode really strongly in Morgan St Cycles series race on Saturday so they are in great form. Have a great time in Canberra, enjoy the hills.

Tour of Two Rivers
This weekend (12th Sept) also sees the first stage of the Tour of Two Rivers held at Griffith. The Griffith club always put on a great event with a great social atmosphere - it is a must race event just for the social activity after the race but in addition to that the Griffith Club are also giving away a set of Mavic wheels as a lucky door prize!.

The Tour of Two Rivers is a graded scratch race format which means that you will always be racing against people of your own ability and some close, tactical races result.  This format also allows for teams to ride together tactically so join up with 3 mates to form teams of 4 and give the other teams a flogging. See the Tour of Two Rivers web site for more details.  If you have just started racing these graded scratch races are a great way to experience racing without having to worry about a faster group of riders chasing you down.

Stage 2 of the Tour of two rivers will be hosted by the Wagga Club at Uranquinty on the 19th Sept. see the Tour of Two Rivers page or below for more details

Club Championship for seniors
The 2nd Stage of the Tour of two rivers on the 19th Sept will also count toward the Wagga Cycling club championships.  As part of the Tour of Two Rivers, A and B grade will ride a 28km individual time trial, C and D grade will ride a 16km ITT course.  These time trials will count for points in the Tour of Two Rivers, Riverina Championship and the Wagga Cycling club championship.  Immediately following the ITT we will hold graded scratch races for three grades over a 28 km course. These races will count for the Wagga cycling club championship only.

Coota Annual
Seven Wagga riders rode in the oota Annual on Saturday the 29th Aug. The 120km race starts in Cootamundra, travels to Young, then to Harden before heading back to the finish in Coota.  More than 170 riders raced the event. Riders had to contend with a breeze from the west but the race started in dry conditions after rain overnight.  The scratch bunch (mostly red Drapac Porsche riders) had caught 6 of the bunches by Harden. The return to Coota was into a difficult headwind/cross wind which saw the Drapac boys smashing the remaining bunches.  Best Wagga rider home was Chris Mumme in 16th place. 11th Place could have gone to Eamon Ryan but he missed a turn with 500m to go - earning him the nickname Eamon "Garmin" Ryan, in good company with geographically challenged Craig Navman Williams and Carl TomTom Henman.

All riders are now looking forward to competing in round 6 of the Morgan St series held on the 5th of Sept at Uranquinty.

Wagga rider Kelly Linden is currently in East Timor racing in the Tour de Timor.  She has been doing really well in the female category, has met the President and offered him  a ride on her bike, had a decent off, suffered from heat stroke and has loved every minute of it.  We look forward to seeing her next weekend and hearing all about it.

Race 6 of the Morgan St Cycles series is coming up
The second last round of the Morgan St cycles series will be held on Saturday the 5th of September.  Make sure you get the bike out of the shed and come racing for that one.

Wagga Seniors represent the club in big local classics
Eight Wagga riders competed in the Wagga to Albury road race last weekend.  A tailwind allowed the limit bunch to make it to the line ahead of the chasing bunches. McDonald's classic cycle team were there in force with Rohan Taylor and Simon Haworth having solid rides whilst Jason Condon got dropped after Walla and Dan Uden suffered from some minor asthma not far out of Wagga.  Chris Mumme and Eamon Ryan rode strongly in C grade showing great potential for the upcoming road racing in the region. Ride of the day would have had to have been Craig Williams who dropped off C grade 15km out of Wagga to pick up B grade and rode with them until Walla Walla, soon after which he picked up scratch and rode with them until the last hill. "It was a great experience to see how the scratch riders do it" said Craig after the race.

These same riders, minus Craig, will be riding in the 120km Coota Annual this Saturday.

The Tour of Two Rivers starts September 12 at Griffith
The Tour is a scratch race interclub series which lends itself to team riding. So get four mates together and enter your team.  Teams are not necessary, if you want to ride as an individual you still can. See the interclub website for more details

Race 5 of the Morgan St Cycles race - Rohan Taylor stakes a claim for the title

Five bunches of riders started race 5 of the Morgan St Cycle series. After the halfway mark scratch and block had joined and began the task of chasing down a well organised 2nd limit. The third bunch again disintegrated with Geoff Hale and Isaac Gilmore breaking away from the other riders.

Rookies Brett Campbell and Marvin Glass rode a strong race from limit but were consumed by the 2nd limit train as they made their break for the finish. With about 10 km to go the 2nd limit bunch had a good minute to 1.5 minute gap on the chasing peloton and it seemed that they may make it back first but it was not to be. The bunches came together with about 1.5km to go.  There was a close sprint between Rohan Taylor and Brad Carroll for 1st place with Rohan taking the honours by half a bike length.   See it here on youtube.

Placings were: 1st and fastest: Rohan Taylor (1 h23m38s, average of 40.3km/h), 2nd and 1st Rookie: Brad Carroll, 3rd Simon Haworth.  Kelly Linden, hungry for the points in the quest for the pink jersey, was the first woman home after stopping to change a puncher. Kelly is off to East Timor this Friday to compete in the Tour of Timor mountain bike race, we wish her all the best for a successful and a safe race.

Rohan's success has taken him to the leader of the points board, 5 points clear of Simon Haworth and Peter Makin.  Dominic Shepherd is still leading the Rookie category and Kelly Linden now has a comfortable lead in the women's category. With two races to go anything can still happen.  The next, and, penultimate race of the series is on the 5th of September.

Don't forget to nominate the rider who you impressed you most by how hard they rode for your bunch for the Tiny Hart Award (see menu on left hand side of screen).  You can nominate riders for the Tiny Hart Award each time you ride a club race.

Thanks to Jeff Windsor, Steve Marks, Bob Robertson, Trevor and Beth Gilmore, Alison Makin and others for their time in Marshalling and officiating the event.

Also thanks to the Wagga Cycle club volunteers: Neil Pinto, Steve Taylor, Carl Henman, Craig Williams, Simon Haworth, Eamon Ryan, Dean Hart, Josh Kennedy, Pater Makin, Kelly Linden, Fiona Bruce and Jason Condon, who all that turned up to man drink stations for the Running club's marathon event on Sunday the 16th. Thanks everyone - it was a great way to say thank you to the running club for helping us run the McDonald's Classic criteriums on the June long weekend.

Don't forget to get your entries in for the Coota annual - it is one of the great handicap races in the region so don't miss it. Wagga has a tradition of supporting this race so get your entries in this week.

Race 5 of the Morgan St Cycles race is on this Saturday the 15th August
Having entered the 2nd half of the series there are still many points up for grabs so even if you haven't raced a round yet you could still take victory in the Morgan St series - just another reason to come racing on Saturday.  Great prizes up for grabs and great racing to match. See you there.

Volunteers need for Sunday's marathon event
On Sunday the 16th of August the Wagga Road Runners are holding their annual Wagga Marathon and they need our help to man 6 drink stations during the morning starting from 8:30. They want two Wagga Cycling club members at each drink station so if you want to help out contact Jason to put your name down.

Hard day at the office for the Iron Mike
Four Wagga Cycle club riders travelled to Canberra on Saturday to race in the Iron Mike scratch races. Dan Uden, Simon Haworth, Jason Condon and Eamon Ryan competed in B grade to undertake the 100km course.  Jason was the first Wagga rider home finishing in 12th place, 2 and half minutes behind the winner.

Junior club championships - 29 August
The club junior and senior championships will be held on Saturday the 29th of August at the Uranquinty course.  Starting 1pm.

Did you enjoy the crit racing at the McDonald's classic in Wagga?
It wouldn't have been possible without the help of the Wagga Road Runners club who gave their time to marshal on the course. We now it is our turn to help them out.  On Sunday the 16th of August the Wagga Road Runners are holding their annual Wagga Marathon and they need our help to man 6 drink stations during the morning starting from 8:30. They want two cyclists at each drink station so if you want to help out contact Jason to put your name down. Basically if you rode in the McDonald's classic crits you should be there.  It is also pretty good fun giving encouragement (sledging) to runners.

UCI Wheel rules
Please note that the Wagga Cycling club will be enforcing the wheel rules as published on the NSW cycling webpage from the 1st september. If you race on non standard wheels your wheels must be on the approved list for you to use them in a race. See list here.

The Morgan St Cycles series passes half way mark with a win from the limit bunch
Twenty three riders competed in race 4 of the Morgan St Cycles series run by the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club at Uranquinty on Saturday the 1st August.  The cold and light winds took their toll on the riders and a hard race was had by all competitors. Several riders opted to drop out of the race at the halfway mark. The scratch group lost Brodie Pearse due to a puncture in the first 5km and Eamon Ryan was suffering after a 3 week overseas trip with no training. He dropped out at roughly the same time leaving the McDonald's Classic Cycling Team guys to take the battle to block.

Block were caught by scratch before the final turnaround and the peloton were then in chase mode to capture the front markers consisting of limit and 2nd limit. At the last turn there was a 6 minute gap from limit to the chasing bunches. With about 10 km of the 56km race to go, four of the five bunches had come together as the peloton managed to draw back what remained of 2nd limit, who had shattered apart by this stage, but there was no catching Petrina and Charlie who could be seen rounding the last bend with the peloton about 400 m behind.

Petrina took the win which elevates her to 2nd place in the overall series, only 1 point behind Peter Makin who suffered back pain during the race and did not finish this race.  The win also puts her within 4 points from the Women's championship leader, Kelly Linden, who was also a DNF in today's race.  Charlie Westerman came home in 2nd place on Petrina's wheel.  In the sprint for the line of the following group, Rohan Taylor crossed the line in the lead, taking 3rd place in the race and fastest time for the 3rd race in a row.  Brad Carroll was the 1st Rookie home in this his first race after showing some good form in the bunch.  Don't forget to get on line and nominate the a rider from the race for the Tiny Hart Award.

Rob Housden from the series sponsor - Morgan St Cycles - was on hand to present the cash and prizes to the winners at the presentation held at the Uranquinty Hotel.

1st place: Petrina Quinn            Fastest Time: Rohan Taylor        1st Rookie:  Brad Carroll

A huge thank you to all the volunteers and officials who turned up to make the race possible:  Paddy Robertson, Iain Hume, Lionel Harmer, Steve and Geoff Marks, Lyn Hart, Lisa Scott, Warren Pearse, and Rob and Paula Housden.  Please note that riders who are unable to ride but help out on the day also bank participation points for the series - something to keep in mind if you are sick or injured but still placing well in the series.  A massive thank you to our series sponsor - Morgan St Cycles and race prize sponsors: Planet Max, Black Sheep Coffee Roasters, Aussie Butt Cream and the Uranquinty Hotel.

The series is becoming very competitive now in all categories.  The first 6 riders of the overall series standings are separated by only 5 points. Dominic Shepherd has taken the lead of the Rookie's championship, 8 points ahead of Peter Makin. See the Morgan St Cycles Series webpage for full results and leader boards.  All categories are still up for grabs so don't miss race 5 on Saturday the 15th August.

Please note: There is a Wagga Cycle Club meeting on next Tuesday 4th August.  7.30pm at the rules Club.

Morgan St Cycles Series provides a mixed bag of performances
Great weather faced 25 riders in race 3 of the Morgan St cycles handicap point score series held at the Uranquinty course on Saturday the 25th of July.

A fantastic solo effort saw rookie Peter Makin take his maiden win in cycling. Peter broke away from his bunch and was first home with a time of 1 hr 46 minutes, more than 4 minutes ahead of the peloton and winning a voucher from Planet Max and $30 cash. The win puts Peter in First place in the race for the series jersey which will be presented at the end of the 7 race series in October. The win also puts Peter in the lead (on count back) in the rookie championship from Dominic Shepherd.  Peter took home some Aussie Butt Cream as the prize for first Rookie home.

The other places were decided in a close sprint for the line by more than 9 riders.  Rookie Geoff Hale took 2nd place less than half a wheel length in front of Jason Condon (3rd).  The 2nd place earn Geoff some Black Sheep Coffee Roasters coffee and $20 cash. First female home ($25 Planet Max voucher) again went to Kelly Linden who is sitting a comfortable 1st place in the women's championship.

A huge thank you to all the officials who turned out to make the racing possible.  Especially Beth and Trevor Gilmore, Paddy and Bob Robertson, Steve Marks and Steve Taylor (who get riders points for marshalling!) and Lisa Scott.

The next race of the series will be held next Saturday at Uranquinty.  Don't miss the action.

Ben's OK
Unfortunately there was a fall on the Tuesday morning training ride. Ben Schmid is sore and sorry for himself, but nothing broken...well except his helmet which is a write off and the bike is a bit dinged.  His helmet probably saved him from a serious injury as he was 'whipped' into the ground as he went sideways.  He has a few scrapes and some bruising around his right eye...but should be back on the bike soon.

A huge day of cycling this Saturday 25th July

The Wagga Cycle Club is staging race 3 of the Morgan Street Series. Racing starts at 2pm. More info on the race go here

Then after the race - have a meal at the Uranquinty Pub before heading to the first Wagga Bicycle Swap Meet being held at the Glenfield McDonalds Store on the corner of Glenfield and Fernleigh Rds Wagga wagga. The Boys from Team McDonalds Cycle Classic will be hosting the night.
We have all marvelled at the massive crowds standing on the side of Mountains and wonder at what the atmosphere must be like. Well we may not be in France but we can gather a massive crowd, create our own atmosphere and watch this year's Tour de France showdown, the third mountain top finish and the all-decisive one. Some of the Tour's most legendary chapters - both the glorious and the tragic ones - were written on the slopes of the dreaded 'bald mountain', the Mont Ventoux. This year, the giant of Provence has been placed on the route just 24 hours prior to the final coronation on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, and is going to be the ultimate cycling spectacle. So join the rest of us and watch the Stage 20 on the two big screen TV's from 10pm at the Glenfield McDonalds Store (The Glenfield store is open 24 hours).
So this is it, Race, buy that bike bit you have been looking for and then Watch the Tour with a heap of other like minded people. It's going to be huge, don't miss out.

Aichinger scores maiden win in race 2 of the Morgan St handicap pointscore series

Windy conditions greeted the riders starting race 2 of the Morgan St Cycles Series held on Saturday 20th June. After 20km of racing all bunches were working well and settling into a rhythm and by the half way mark several bunches had merged. Limit and 2nd limit came together losing only a few riders along the way.  Block had caught 2nd block after losing Eamon Ryan at the start line (he was warming up and missed his start in block so raced with scratch - and did it no problems!). Not long after half way scratch caught up and the chase for the race began.  Despite the efforts of all behind them, the front group did not get caught, coming home just over a minute ahead of the peloton.  Tony Aichinger had worked out tactics with Kelly Linden - "you go fast and I'll follow" but Kelly wasn't too keen on those plans and a sprint for the line saw Tony take his maiden victory ahead of Kelly (who took 2nd and 1st female rider) closely followed by Des Mohr in 3rd place. Petrina Quinn came 4th with 5th place, Peter Makin, also taking 1st Rookie.  Rohan Taylor recorded the fastest time with an average speed of 40.2km/h.
Kelly Linden won 2nd place and some Black Sheep Coffee Roasters coffee + cash and a Planet Max voucher for being 1st female 3rd place - Des Mohr wins some Aussie Butt Cream + cash 1st Rookie - Peter Makin wins a Planet Max voucher Fastest time - Rohan Taylor wins some coin and a book of Uranquinty hotel drink vouchers and a bunch of new friends.
Average speed 40.2km/h

Tony's win puts him equal 1st in the points with Eamon Ryan for the overall series . Kelly Linden is top female and Eamon is 2 points ahead of David Glass in the Rookie category. Check out the results on the Morgan St Cycles series page

We would like to thank our event sponsors Planet Max, Black Sheep Coffee Roasters, the Uranquinty hotel and Series sponsor - Morgan St Cycles.

A huge thanks to Beth and Trevor Gilmore, Bob Robertson and the other officials for giving their time to make the event possible.

Also - don't forget to nominate the rider in this week's race for the Tiny Hart award  (see link in menu on left of screen) Tiny Award

Photos now on line from the McDonald's Classic Website

With thanks to Ben Murphy and Greg Long the McDonald's Classic Website now has a series of photos from the crit racing in the centre of Wagga.  Don't forget to check it out.

Also - Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hume family now as Stuart is in hospital in Sydney recovering from surgery after a serious motorcycling accident on Saturday. After helping out with the marshalling for the road race, Stuart left the Start/Finish line on his motorbike. A short time later he crashed on the Wantabadgery road but was not discovered until about 10am the following day. The Hume family have long been active members of the club and we all wish Stuart a speedy recovery.

A record field, great racing and it didn't rain - the McDonald's Classic a huge success

The weather did the right thing by us and the hours of organisation put in by the club workers paid off.  There were many happy faces after the two days of racing with many people commenting on what a great event we put on.  Wagga riders featured well in the money and Carl Henman won a new Cervelo RS race bike.  Photos of the event to be posted soon.

Grant Higginson of "Cut above Productions" spent the weekend taking footage for a DVD he is selling for $25 - half of that goes to Ronald McDonald House so it is great value and helping a great cause.  If you would like a copy please email grant.

For all the results of the weekend please see the event website

Last stage of the Tour de Riverina - it comes down to the line at Griffith on Saturday

Matt Garlan is sitting in 2nd place on GC just 2 behind Griffith's Robert Hall. Could this be Matt's moment to shine? Will Jeremy Scott end the tour in the same style he started or will Mark Wilson strive for some podium action?

Four points separate Matt and Jeremy, 1st and 2nd, respectively,  in the best young rider category.  Jim Hogan is equal 1st with Ken Payne in the 45+ category.  Wagga riders of the Southern sports academy lead the teams category.

Wagga is also looking good to retain the Barry O'Hagan trophy with a 10 point lead over Albury/Wodonga.

Yes indeed, it has been another great year in the Tour de Riverina for the Wagga Cycling club. It is an exciting end to a great series, with plenty of chances for Wagga riders to taste victory and tour glory.  Good luck to all Wagga racers on Saturday.

There is a Wagga Cycle Club meeting on Tuesday 2/6/09.  7.30pm at the Rules Club.  All members welcome

Riders blown away by 1st race of Morgan St Cycles Handicap series

The first race of the  Morgan St Cycles Point Score series was held on Saturday May 23.  An extremely windy day made it tough going for the 24 riders who started the weather shorten (28km) race.

New rider Ryan Emon took the win and Planet Max prize for 1st place. Being in his first year of racing also meant he took the Planet Max 1st rookie prize.  Ryan showed good form after riding away from his bunch to come home a 1min 30s ahead of David Glass who took the Aussie Butt Cream 2nd place and Marvin Glass took home some Black Sheep coffee for 3rd place. Just 30 s later the survivors of the scratch and block bunches crossed the line with Brodie Pearce recording the fastest time and winning a 10 drink voucher at the Quinty Pub for his troubles.  Planet Max also provided the prize for first woman home, Kelly Linden. The next race of the series is the 20th of June.

Don't forget that the final stage of the Tour de Riverina is held this Saturday - entries by Thursday at the Tour de Riverina webpage.

Entries have all but closed for the Wagga McDonald's Classic on the 6th and 7th of June. If you are not racing please contact jason to put your hand up to help out - we need all the helpers we can get.

Coota Carnage!

Eight Wagga riders competed in the Cootamundra Haycarters road race on Saturday that saw a massive  262 riders start.  Josh Kennedy, Tony Aichinger, Simon Haworth, Dan Uden, Jim Hogan, Nigel Irvine, Chris Mumme and Steve Marks represented the Wagga Club.  Tony took the cash for the first sprint - his first success in a big race. Well done Tony. Unfortunately that was the only success for Wagga riders on the weekend.  The bunches came together with about 10 km to go and quite a few riders decided that, with that many riders on a finite width of road, disaster would not be far away. Only 5km later the inevitable occurred. An estimated 40-50 riders came to grief in a huge pile up that closed the road down.  Nigel Irvine was the only Wagga rider to be caught up in the wreckage. He sustained only bruising to his hand and minor damage to a brake lever, very lucky considering that some bikes were snapped in half and quite a few riders sustained injury. Scratch got up for the win.

The recovery race on Sunday was without major incident. A strong crosswind took its toll on the field and scratch yet again got up for the win.

Simon Haworth will travel to the coast to compete in the NSW Master crits and road racing championships this weekend. Good luck Simon - here's to a successful weekend.

Local Junior Tour success

Wagga cycle club riders and Southern Sports Academy (SSA) Squad riders completed strongly over the weekend at the Wagga Gwen French Memorial 2 day Junior Tour.

Matthew Garlan (SSA) proved himself worthy of a A grade start in the U17 age group this weekend. The first year rider started the tour with a great time in the 10km time trial, he then held on to the lead bunch in each of the three road races to finish a fantastic 6th place overall in the Tour. Jackson Law from the Illawarra club the overall winner in the 17A's. The 3 New Zealand riders Tom Beadle, Andrew Miller and Jamie Culling completed all four stages of the tour, Tom Beadle finishing the best of the 3 in 8th position overall.

In the 17B grade Jeremy Scott (SSA) dominated the field to finish 1st overall. Jeremy posted a great time trial and then out sprinted the field to win two of the three road races with Albury riders Matt Lees and Nick Stuart (SSA) pushing him in each of the stages.  In the U17 women Grace Rees (SSA) finished 9th overall in a very experience field of riders, Kayla Salopek from Lidcombe Alburn the eventual winner from a very determined Kirsty Mills from St George CC

Other riders to perform well were Cameron Scott in the U13 finishing 4th overall, Lachlan Scott U11, 3rd overall and Saxby Harrison in the U9 finishing 3rd overall and pulling out an exciting win in the last stage of the tour.

Canberra Tour

Eight Wagga riders made the trek to Canberra to take on the hills and the competition.  Tony Aichinger came home in 40th place in E grade men GC after 3 stages.  Ian Gun took 19th in general classification in D grade 4 minutes off the lead, Josh Kennedy placed 26th, Graham Springett 48th.  The McDonald's Classic cycle team competed in C grade. Dan Uden placed well in Stage 1 but retired after a string of bad luck - a puncher, followed by a problem with the wheel he picked up from the spares car that caused him to pull out of stage 2. Simon Haworth and Jason Condon were in 44 and 45th place with Rohan Taylor a minute back in 48th position in GC.  A great weekend as had by all - it was a well run event and an enjoyable weekend. Detailed results here.

Mark Wilson cleans up in Stage 4 of the Riverina Tour at Rutherglen

More than 100 riders started the Geoff Dixon Memorial race on Sunday. Riders were treated to fantastic conditions and the Albury/Wodonga club put on a great race. Local riders featured well in the top 10. MR Wilson won the first race of his career after getting the draft of Carl Henman who was trying to back up after last years success at the Rutherglen race.

"The sprint was tight but a nice opening on the inside appeared so I took it. With 5 metres to go knew it (the race) was mine". When asked what the race was like Mark "sashman" Wilson said that "we had a really good sized bunch that worked hard all day". The bunch working allowed Mark to feel good after struggling early "then things settled down and it was good".  Josh Kennedy ended up running off the road after a touch with another rider 2 km from the finish. "Josh got taken out when he was right on my left, that was pretty freaky, I was lucky".

Matt Garlan took 5th place giving him into second on GC in the tour and the lead in the best younger rider category. Jim Hogan holds the leading over 45 age category. Carl Henman and Craig Williams, who were able to find Rutherglen, came home in 8th and 10th place, respectively.

The final stage of the Tour is on the 30th of May at Griffith.

The Kiwis are coming

This years Gwen French Junior tour will see three U17 riders from New Zealand cross the ditch to compete.

With domestic travel covered by Wagga Orthodontics, the young Kiwis will ride in the Wagga junior tour to get some international experience and it is hoped that at some time in the future some of the Wagga juniors will be able to travel to NZ to experience racing over there. Whilst in Wagga they will be billeted out with families of local junior racers for a real Australian experience.

The Junior tour is held on the first weekend in May - the club needs its senior racers who are not racing in Canberra that weekend to step up and help out on Saturday or Sunday. We need drivers and corner marshals - call Steve Marks on 0427773198 to indicate your availability.

It is the parents of the juniors that make it possible for senior racing to occur so the best way to thank them for all their time and effort is to help out for the Junior Tour. This allows the parents to get their kids ready for their races and watch them race rather than doing the jobs the parents normally do to make racing happen.  Senior Riders please give your time - the parents give their time for us so we can race - now it is payback time.

Greg Westerman brings GOLD home from Southern Championships
He may have been the only Junior representing the club at Sunday's Southern Division Championships at Breadalbane but Greg Westerman did the club proud by riding a great race to take gold in the U11 boys road race.
Well done Greg - Congratulations

The only other Wagga rider competing at the event was Steve Marks.  Steve weathered the storm of the other clubs riding as teams to come home in 9th place in a bunch sprint with about 20 others.

Butch Menz Memorial Race a huge success

More than 100 riders took to the road from Collingullie for the 70km long, Stage 3 of the Tour de Riverina. As expected the pace was on from the start with a constant stream of broken riders falling back into the grasp of the following back markers.

All bunches came together shortly after the half way mark and but the pace remained high and all the available road was used in the slight crosswind encountered back towards The Rock. The first rise out of the town was the first opportunity for the faster riders to put some pressure on the peloton and in the quest for more power one rider fell causing enough disruption for the front 20 or so riders to escape the main bunch.  Lionel Harmer was lucky to avoid the fall executing a leap over the fallen rider's front wheel - apparently Cervelos are even fast when ridden sideways.

Simon Haworth, Rohan Taylor, Dan Uden and Brodie Pearce all managed to stay in front of the crash and were part of the leading group.  Dan came home in 6th, Brodie in 7th and Simon in 9th. A great result for the Wagga riders. Ash Humbert came 5th.

Get your entries in for the Butch Menz Tour de Riverina Race this Saturday

The race starts at 1:30 on Saturday so there is still plenty of time to get your entry in at the Tour de Riverina webpage.  It will be a great race - the back markers are fired up for a result.  Front markers - be sure to do your helmets up tight so they don't get blown off as the scratch riders blast past!

Once again Wagga riders make up a a third of the field - so on the weight of numbers we should get a good result or two this weekend.

Have a good race everyone

Racing heats up at Stock in Stage 2 of the Tour de Riverina

A hot day greeted riders in Stage 2 of the Tour de Riverina at Stockinbingal on Saturday.  The pace was fast and furious for those who managed to navigate their way to the start line in time and it was even faster and more furious for Craig Williams and Carl Henman (AKA  Navman and TomTom) who were geographically embarrassed and missed the start - though they claim that it was a nice day for a drive.
The race saw the first half of riders come together with the second half of the field chasing them down but to no avail. First Wagga Cycling Club riders home were Jimmy Hogan 6th and Brett Campbell 10th.  For more detailed results and photos check out the Tour de Riverina website.

Wagga members are still doing Ok in the category places. Jeremy Scott is still leading the Best Young Rider category. Southern Sport Academy holds Best Team category.

The next stage of the tour takes place on Saturday the 28th - hosted by the Wagga club.  The race starts at Collingullie at 1:30pm.  Get your entries in via the Tour de Riverina website before Thursday.  If you are not going to ride or are looking for something to do next Saturday, we are always looking for helpers to drive safety cars or help out - email Jason if you can lend a hand.

Wagga riders show up in force for Stage 2 of the Tour de Riverina

Following on from the huge turn out at Coolamon, 32 Wagga cycling club members will take to the road at Stockinbingal. This, the shortest course in the tour, will test the field of 113 riders. Traditionally a hard and fast race, nothing short of a 110% effort all the way will be competitive.

Will the youth of Jeremy Scott and Matt Garlan back up or will the pressure be too much? Will they hurt their bunch once more on the hills or will scratch keep it together to cleanup everyone? With big numbers in some of the earlier bunches there is plenty of speed to be had if everyone works together. Here's wishing all riders a successful day.

Wagga's McDonald's Classic Cycling Team reaches podium in Albury Crits

Two days of criterium racing during Albury's Multisport event saw McDonald's Classic Cycling Team on the podium in several races.  Best of the weekend was Dashing Dan Uden's performance in Saturday's long course crit. Dan took an impressive 1st place in B grade with Simon Haworth taking 3rd. Simon backed up on Sunday's shorter circuit crit with a 5th place, just behind fellow teammate Rohan Taylor (4th). Jason Condon took 2nd in C grade and Tony Aichinger tasted the fun of crit racing in the D grade race.

New Wagga rider, Kelly Linden, had consistent results across the weekend coming 5th in both races of the women's A grade crits. The top 4 places were taken by national or international level riders so it was a great effort by Kelly. This event was great fun and worth writing in the dairy for things to do next year for riders of all abilities.

Entries for Southern Division Championships close soon

The Southern Division Championships are held on Sunday the 29th of March. If you want to be a part of these graded scratch races you need to let Beth Gilmore, the club secretary  know by this Friday.

Entry fees are:
Under 9, 11, 13, 15 Men and Women            $5
Under 17 Men and Women                            $10
U19 Men and Women                                    $15
Men, Women, Masters Men and Women    $15

All money is due in by Wed 13/3/09 - Beth will be down at the track on Wednesday night to collect money or you can discuss payment with Beth when you put your name down

The races are held at Breadalbane on the old Hume Highway. Races start at 10am sharp.

The graded scratch races are great fun and it really helps to have a lot of riders from the same club along to help work against the other clubs - so come on and put your name down.  There should be a great turn out from Wagga this year.

The racing is held the day after stage 3 of the Tour de Riverina - Wagga's Butch Menz race - so it is also good training for races where you need to back up for 2 days racing (eg the Wagga McDonald's classic)

Cycling is everyone's business

Petrina Quinn has penned an article for Wagga Business Magazine about the benefits of cycling, the social and business networks it creates and the support cycling in Wagga gets from local businesses. A great positive cycling story - some familiar faces to be seen in the story as well. Nice work Petrina.

GREAT SCOTT! - Jeremy takes line honours at opening stage of the TdR

Sunday was a magic day for racing that saw the scratch bunch shatter, the other back markers falter and limiters conquer. At the end of the 64km race, hardman Matt Garlan took the sting out of the bunch allowing from fellow Southern Academy of Sport rider, Jeremy Scott, to take victory.  Steve Taylor and his brand new R3 was the next Wagga rider home in 8th pace with Jimmy Hogan in 10th.  There were a few surges on the hilly section which took their toll on the bunch and several riders suffered. Greg Scott was dropped from the bunch and missed seeing Jeremy take the win but I'm sure he has been told about it over the dinner table a few times already.

Gutsiest ride went to Graham Springett who punched 18km into the race, change the flat, rejoined with block and finished with them! Whilst unfortunate that this meant he wasn't with the winning bunch as they crossed the line, Graham would be happy that the handicapper was impressed by his effort!

Special mention to the Wagga riders having their first race: Brett Campbell, Geoff Hale, Geoff Seymour, Joshua Kennedy, Nathan McIntosh, Kathryn Naumann, Dominic Shephard, Andrew Smith and Mark
Wallace. Other new member Kelly Linden, Peter Sweeney. Also a welcome back to Des Mohr after illness took him out of the sport for a little while.
Everyone was happy with their races and are keen for the next round at Stockinbingal in 3 weeks time.

Marshalling up success at Tassie track carnivals

The Marshall family have tasted early success at the Devonport Track carnival in Tasmania.  Still racing in Wagga colours, Jess took 1st place and Zach 3rd in the 1000m handicap race. An awesome result.  Zach also placed 3rd in the U13 1000m scratch race.

On the same day Paul Fellows came 2nd in the 1000m Handicap race from a 45m mark and the following day, riding in the NSW team, Paul took 1st place in the Teams Sprint

see photo of Jess and Zach on the podium at redbackdesigns.com.au here

The 2nd night of the Devonport carnival brought a 2nd place for Mick Marshall in the E grade scratch race (must be E for Engine). Zach then placed 3rd in the U13 1000 handicap and Jess took 3rd place in the U13 scratch race.

How to get more people racing in 2009?

We all know that cycling is pretty popular in Wagga at the moment. We get big turn outs to social rides like the stubby ride, the Tuesday and Thursday bunch rides, the Wagga Christmas ride where all the bike groups come together for a ride and the Saturday morning Kidson's ride. So how can we convert some of this popularity into more racers in our club road racing and how can we make sure that the club's 2009 road racing season is popular?

To have a voice please have a look at the forum found here and have your say.  You don't have to be a Wagga cycle club member to have an opinion. Any comments are much appreciated.  You can make up your own user name on the forum if you want to remain anonymous and mysterious.
