Unfortunately track racing had to be cancelled this week due to the continuing work on the erection of light towers around the track. Apparently the large holes that had been dug for the base of the towers were deemed an OH&S issue and we were prevented from entering the grounds. Hopefully work will be completed by mid January when we return to racing. Apologies to those that turned up and found the gates locked!

Track racing resumes Wednesday 12th January - See you there!

The boys qualified fastest and went into the Gold/Silver ride off against a strong team from the Central Coast Cycling Club. After a flying start out of the gates by Saxon, they went on to win by 0.2 seconds. Well done guys!

Wagga Junior Riders Dominate in Dubbo

The summer track racing season is now in full swing, and Wagga Wagga Cycle Club members took advantage of an opportunity to test their legs at the Dubbo Open Track Carnival last weekend.  Combined with this event was the completion of the 2010 Track championships for the Under 9, 11 and 13 age groups, with the running of the Sprint Derby Championship which was washed out last march.

Under 9 rider Saxby Harrison continued his dominant form from earlier in the year, with a clear victory in the Under 9 age group.  In the Under 13 Girls division, Emily Bruce fought hard in the final race to bring home a silver medal.  The Under 13 boys final was dominated by Wagga riders Saxon Hodges and Cameron Scott, who came home with silver and gold medals respectively.  Lachlan Scott also performed strongly in the elimination series of this event, narrowly missing a spot in the final four.

Each year, points are allocated to riders who finish in the top three placings in each of the three State Title events contested (time trial, scratch race and sprint derby).  These points are tallied up, with the winner receiving the Jackson Pascoe Memorial Aware, in memory of young Dubbo rider Jackson Pascoe and his father John, who were tragically killed in a truck accident in late 2005.  This year, the award has been jointly won by Saxby Harrison and Cameron Scott, both of whom brought home three gold medals. Saxby also broke a State record in the Individual Time Trial. It is the third year, since the inception of the award, that it has been won by Wagga riders, demonstrating the strength of the junior program within the local club.

During the evening carnival last Saturday, strong performances were put in by all Wagga riders.  Cameron Scott showed that the move to an older age group and a bigger gear was no challenge, featuring in the top two finishers in each race contested.  Other riders to perform well include Greg Westerman, Baden Housden, Max Housden, Andrew Guertson, Jamie Green, Isaac Gilmore Darren Harrison, Greg Hodges and Charlie Westerman.  All in all, it was a successful outing for the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club.

Junior Development Camp to Dunc Gray Velodrome

Thanks to a recent sports grant from the Wagga Wagga City CouncilWagga Cycle Club was able to run a junior development camp for our cyclists in the U13 to U19 age groups. Last Saturday fifteen enthusiastic young cyclists boarded a bus bound for the Dunc Gray velodrome in Sydney under the watchful eyes of Greg and Sondra Hodges and Fiona Bruce. By all reports the children were very well behaved. However, the adults fear their hearing may never be the same again!

On board entertainment during trip included thought provoking competitions such as:  Stretch the Giant Python (well done Marvin), Blow the Largest Bubble (Andrea) and Rip the Longest Mintie Wrapper (Cam). Beth and Lachie showed their creativity by bending their giant pythons into a skiing cowboy and snake. Your parents will be so proud! Max won the Best Behaved for sleeping the entire way!

Arriving at the velodrome by 12pm, the group were able to spend a solid 5 hours on ‘the boards’ under the expert guidance of Nigel Irvine and Rob Housden, who generously shared their knowledge with our youngsters. It was a valuable experience for all as the older riders were able to mentor the ‘first timers’ and help develop their confidence and improve their track riding skills.

By 5 o’clock everyone was exhausted but still giving their all. Lachie, Jack and Andy had to be dragged off, while Charlie W tried to squeeze in the last 3 laps to clock up a commendable 80km for the afternoon.

Many thanks to the parents who travelled to Sydney to support their children and who helped to make the camp an overwhelming success. Special thanks to Beth Gilmour and Paula Housden for management of events and to Greg Hodges for driving the bus.

Morgan St Cycle series race 5 results
Only 11 riders braved the elements on Saturday to race in the 5th of 7 races in the Morgan St Cycles handicap point score.  David Glass took the win and the Morgan St Cycles winner cheque followed by Charlie Westerman and Lionel Harmer.  Baden Housden was first rookie home and Simon Haworth held the fastest time. Scratch finished 2 min 30 behind the winning bunch.
Next race of the series will be held on the 4th September

Wagga to Albury
The wind and rain made this year's Wagga to Albury race a tough day out.  Best Wagga rider home was Eamon Ryan who finished in the sprint bunch.  Bill Robertson and Mick Schmid were the only other wagga riders to make the finish after all other Wagga riders pulled out along the way.  It was a hard ride given the cross winds and rain.  No Wagga riders were caught up in the fall that occurred in the block and scratch group after Culcairn - 4 ambulances were required and a few nasty injuries were obtained by several riders.

Coota Annual
This weekend several Wagga riders will compete in the Coota Annual - another tough race on the calendar.  Good luck to all starting the event - hope you bring home some cash.

Website
We have been having a few minor issues with the web service provider which have resulted in the site being offline for a while - hopefully we have seen the end of the troubles.

Morgan St Cycles series - race 4 results
Greg Scott took the win in race 4 of the Morgan St cycles series held last Saturday the 10th July.  In a Cancellarian effort, Greg rode 42 km by himself to come home victorious. Charlie Westerman came 2nd and the 2009 Rookie Champion Dom Shepherd was 3rd.  Rob Deery punished all in scratch and block to take fastest time just ahead of Bill Robertson who is still smiling after taking possession of his new Cervelo RS.

The results of the 4th race mean that David Glass (33pts)  still holds the top place on GC ahead of Jack Bolton (24), Michael Schmid (21) and Bill Robertson (21).  Jack Bolton once again took maximum points for the Rookie Championship furthering the hold he has on the title.  Once more we had no women racers - come on ladies, get a number on your back and take home some easy cash!  The next race in the series is on the 21st August.  The nature of the series is that the outcome of one race can have a big affect on the standings so race 5 is not to be missed.

A great race for Morgan St Race 2
A brief rain shower was enough to break the spirits of some riders who packed up and headed home prior to race 2 of the Morgan St Cycles handicap pointscore series held at Uranquinty on Saturday the 29th May.  The 25 hardcore riders that remained were able to experience premium racing conditions, once the rain stopped and they formed up to start under a magnificent rainbow.  Unfortunately both block and scratch suffered losses from their ranks due to last minute, fair weathered - non starters so it was going to be a big ask for them to close the gap to the front markers. The front markers were looking the goods. However, Billy Higginson gave himself a handicap after missing his bunch's start whilst sorting out his riding apparel.

Once into the race scratch were suffering after Brodie Pearse pulled out and Eamon Ryan unleashed some horsepower. Meanwhile block were working well keeping everyone together and riding in a good rhythm with the help of a riders like Jim Hogan and Steve Taylor who were picked up from earlier bunches.  Scratch finally caught block with several kilometres to go but the distance to the front markers was just too much.  However the handicapper must have been happy as all bunches were within 30 seconds of each other after 48 km. The race for first place was won by Michael Schmid who is reaping the benefits of a secret training program that some say involves drinking the sweat of Siberian goats herded only on tuesdays. All we know is that he is in great form heading into some important races. Bill Robertson was right on his wheel finishing in 2nd place.  Series leader, David Glass, was 3rd.  Darren Harrison was 4th after getting a good sit on Tony Aichinger's wheel, Tony finished 5th.   Peter Treloar took fastest time once more.  First Rookie home was Jack Bolton in 7th place.  We have two 1st time riders who loved the fun racing can bring and no doubt are looking forward to the next race.

A massive thanks to the volunteers and officials who stood out in the rain so that we could race. Thanks also to series sponsors - Morgan St Cycles,  Black sheep coffee roasters, the Uranquinty Hotel, and Aussie Butt Cream
Winners are grinners - 1st Place: Mick Schmid Fastest Time - Peter Treloar 2nd Place - Bill Robertson

See all the points at the Morgan St Cycles series page by clicking on the menu on the left of screen or by clicking on the Morgan St logo on the home page.

Racing next week is a Coolamon for the final stage of the Tour de Riverina - don't forget to enter via TdR webpage.

The weekend after is the long weekend and the weekend of the McDonald's Classic so make sure your entries are in - they close tonight (sunday 30th May)

Next Morgan St race is the 19th June at Uranquinty

Vale Dave Tucker 13-3-1931 to 22-5-2010

Young Dave Tucker’s love for cycling began in 1946 as a 15 years old. When he joined the ‘Wagga District League Cycling Club’ and began cycle racing.

He’s ability on the bike was noticed almost immediately with plenty of good results all around the Riverina region on both the track and the road, where Dave established himself as one of the regions strongest cyclists over a ten year period.

Through the 1950’s and 60’s cycling was an extremely popular sport in Australia and the ‘Riverina Zone’ was among the strongest cycling communities in the country with healthy clubs in Wagga, Albury, Leeton, Narrandera, Junee, Harden, Cootamundra to name but a few. In fact, Dave and many of his Wagga team mates would regularly jump on the 5:00pm train, with their bikes, and travel to Albury to compete in Albury’s weekly club race and then jump back on the 11:00pm train and return home.

In 1955 Dave was awarded the honour of ‘Wagga District League Cycling Club’s – Club Captain’ and was presented with the prestigious ‘Blue Club Captain’s Blazer’. The blazer has taken pride of place in Dave’s wardrobe ever since.

After a very successful career on the bike Dave decided to hang up the bike in 1957 before marring Shirley in 1958. However, he still remained involved in the sport and was the Wagga Club’s handicapper for many years though the 1960’s.

In 1976 at the age of 45 Dave decided to dust the cobwebs off the bike and start racing again. He had almost instant success when he won one the 1977 ‘Lloyds Homes 100km Classic Road Race’ right here in his home town. The race was one of the country’s most prestigious handicap road races and Dave won in a bunch sprint off a very respectable handicap of 16.30 minutes.

His success continued in 1981 at the age of 50 when he won another one of the regions more notable races, the ‘Bob Paterson Memorial 70km Road Race’ at Coolamon. Once again he worked well with his co-markers to hold off a classy field which included world class riders.

Dave retired from racing again in the mid 1980’s but kept riding socially. However, the opportunity to compete in the Australian Veterans Games here in his home town in 1993 was too much for Dave, so he ‘polished up’ his racing shoes once again and had one last crack at glory at the age of 62. He even pulled his old track bike out of the shed to compete in the track events! It proved to be a successful campaign as he won; 1 gold 2 silvers and a bronze medal at the championships and retired from racing as an Australian Veterans Champion.

After Dave finally retired from racing he continued his involvement in the sport as the Wagga Cycling Club’s official lap scorer and bell ringer where he was a permanent fixture on the infield at the Wagga cycling track, at all of it’s track cycling events, right up until he got sick last year.

The sport of cycling in our area has certainly benefited from Dave’s involvement over many decades. Larger than life characters like Dave (Buzz) Tucker are legendary and old ‘Buzz’ is a legend and will be sadly missed by all in the Cycling community.

Rebel & Goliath battle at the McDonalds Classic June Long weekend

Wagga Cycle Club junior member Rebel Brooker, will be taking on Leighton Marshall from 93.1 Star FM. Leighton is a local radio personality and tireless fundraiser for the Kids Kottage/Ronald McDonald House. Six year old Rebel and Leighton will compete in a two lap dash around a shortened version of the Criterium circuit encompassing Victory memorial gardens.

Long term sponsor of the McDonalds Classic, Tony Aichinger, has put up $1000 to lure Leighton out of cycling retirement. The $1000 will be given to the 93.1 Star FM Kids Kottage/Ronald McDonald House. The two lap dash will be a curtain raiser to the A and B Grade Criterium races on the Sunday (June Long Weekend) of the McDonalds Classic. Spectators and Criterium participants will be treated to a David and Goliath battle, where Rebel has everything to gain and Leighton gets heckled on radio for the next 6 months if he loses to a 6 year old girl.

An event not to be missed!

Wagga hosts another successful Junior Tour.

May 15/16 saw exceptional racing from local riders in the Wagga Wagga Junior Tour held at Wantabadgery, with 15 club members competing across most age groups.  Tour results were compiled in a manner similar to that of the Pro tours in Australia and Europe, with all riders vying for points and time bonuses for their overall position in the General Classification. Outstanding performances were recorded from the following riders:

Saxby Harrison (Under 9): Second in the General Classification, having dominated in both road races contested.

Emily Bruce (U13 Girls): Second in the Time Trial, first in both road races and therefore first in the General Classification.  Emily’s is certainly showing great potential for the remainder of the road racing season.

Cameron Scott (Under 13 Boys):  First in all three events (time trial and both road races), taking out first place in the general classification.

Greg Westerman (U15 Men B Grade): Third in General Classification, with an exceptional performance in Saturday’s road race.

Jeremy Scott (Under 17 Men A Grade):  Fourth in General Classification, in a hotly contested series of races.  The U17s GC was calculated on elapsed time, with Scott finishing the tour only 24 seconds behind the winner after over 100 km of racing.

The three competitors who travelled from New Zealand were full of praise for the local event, having enjoyed racing against different riders and on different courses.

Cootamundra Haycarters weekend a mixed bag for Wagga riders
The Cootamundra Haycarters weekend of racing brings big fields of cyclists together for a 70 and 60 km handicap road race on Saturday and Sunday respectively.  Almost 200 riders competed in Saturdays Haycarters  race but the field was soon reduced to 2/3 its size with the longest freight train known to man caused the last 3 bunches to stop for almost 5 minutes.  Once the train had cleared the crossing scratch took off in search of the front bunches leaving block and 2nd block no chance to hang on in the cross wind conditions.  Limit remained too far ahead and took the win with the peloton, which included a very exhausted scratch, less than a minute behind.  No Wagga riders featured in the places, a disappointing day for some.

A smaller field fronted the start line for Sunday's recovery race, a 60km - 35km loop and 25km loop on the eastern side of Coota.  After about 25km the middle 4 bunches had come together and were working strongly to catch the front markers. The scratch markers were paying the price for a big night out in Coota with the swedish barmaids of the Globe Hotel and were nowhere to be seen.  Simon Haworth took 2nd place in a close sprint of about 30 riders.

The Wagga Junior Tour is held this weekend - 135 racers are registered.  If you can help out driving a car or marshalling please let Beth Gilmore or Paddy Robertson know

The Cootamundra Haycarters event is being held this weekend.  Eleven Wagga riders will be making the trip to compete,

Glass shatters Morgan St Cycles field of 36 racers
David Glass has taken out the 1st race of the 2010 Morgan St Cycles Pointscore series held today Saturday 17th at Uranquinty.  David managed to put a 20m gap in to the peloton comprising the first 3 bunches in the final sprint to win the Morgan St Cycles voucher and maximum points in the series.  Peter Makin came home second winning winning a dinner at the Quinty Pub.  Darren Harrison was 3rd.  The remaining bunches had joined together in the final kilometres but where more than 4 minutes off the front markers.  The sprint for fastest time went to Peter Treloar winning him cash and drinks thanks to the Quinty pub.  Kelly Linden was the 1st female home winning some Aussie Butt Cream thanks to sponsor Petrina Quinn, who had a minor off after clipping a wheel.  Petrina is OK.
pre-race tactics discussion doing the business

There were 3 ladies competing in the race - more would be good - so if you are a female rider and want to have a go at racing, the Morgan St Cycles series is the best place to start....There are a few ladies around Wagga in Tuesday/Thursday and Saturday bunches who have more than enough talent to be competitive in the races - come on and get into it - you know who your are.......

First Rookie home, taking the good beans from Black Sheep Coffee Roasters, was Scott Braid. Scott has been riding really well and is sure to be a major contender in this year's Rookie title.  There were 4 rookie riders in today's race, Lisa Scott, Andrew McLeod, Charlie Ellis and Scott.  Welcome to the sport and here's wishing you all the best in your future races.

Southern Division Road Championships
Seven Wagga riders made the trip to Breadalbane near Goulburn for the scratch race format races.

Saxby Hodges won 1st place in the U13 Boys 12km road race. Charlie Westerman blitzed the field to win the 45km Masters D grade mens race.  The elite D grader said he "went alright, it was a good race" which was a bit of an understatement given the form he showed the competition.  Nigel Irvine finished with the bunch in the 45km Masters B grade whilst Steve Marks fell in the last few kms of the C grade Masters race when another competitor overlapped a wheel several riders in front of him causing a spill. Steve was fine but the crash took him out of contention for the final sprint.  Simon Haworth took 3rd place in the 90km Masters mens A grade race with Jason Condon finishing with the sprint bunch.  Simon had an impressive race lunching several attacks up the road and was in a 5 man break away for much of the 1st half of the race.

Gold for Saxby Bronze for Simon Gold for Charlie

Max Housden and Jeremy Scott win Silver at National Junior track championships

Southern Sports Academy Cycling Squad members, Max Housden and Jeremy Scott, have both won silver medals at the National Junior Track titles held in Melbourne over the last week.

Max picked up two silver medals – one each for the time trial and the individual sprint. In both instances, Max was just pipped by talented fellow NSW team member – Travis Smedley. Very little separated the two cyclists at the National Championships or at the State championships, where Housden was able to get the points against Smedley.  The two outstanding prospects will undoubtedly continue to push each other to greater heights as they progress through the age ranks.

Endurance specialist, Jeremy Scott, picked up his silver medal in the teams pursuit. The four man NSW team was no match for the highly professional Victorian outfit who dominated through the entire Championships. Scott will now turn his attention to the road season as well as his mountain bike riding – of which he is one of the most promising young prospects in the state. Jeremy will travel to Sparrow Hill, near Queanbeyan, this weekend to compete in the Mont 24 hour Mountain Bike Race.

Wagga Cyclists Continue to Bring Home Medals - by Greg Scott

Seven junior riders from the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club travelled to Dubbo recently to compete in the U9, U11 and U13 NSW Track Championships.  While they were only able to compete in two of the scheduled events due to rain, these riders showed the rest of NSW what they were made of.

Under 9 rider Saxby Harrison put on the performance of the meet, winning gold medals in the 410 metre time trial and in the 3 lap scratch race.  Harrison dominated both events, setting a new track record for the time trial by completing the distance in just 40.84 seconds.  In the Under 13 girls, Emily Bruce rode a perfect scratch race to take the gold medal.  Patiently waiting for the right moment, Bruce sprinted past the favourites with 200 metres to go to take an impressive win in her first State Championship meet.

Cameron Scott and Saxon Hodges, both riding in the Under 13 boys division, showed the rest of the state what smart racing is all about.  Scott won gold medals in both the time trial and the 8 lap scratch race, while Hodges brought home a bronze medal in the scratch race.  Although faced with the temptation to lead from the front, both riders smartly positioned themselves within the 12-strong pack to take advantage of any chances to attack.  The last lap was a spectacle of strong junior racing, with both Scott and Hodges lifting the pace, forcing the rest of the field chase to the line.

Other riders to travel to Dubbo included Brandon Ellis (U11), Bailey Ellis and Lachlan Scott (both U13).  Despite not taking out podium places, all three riders showed the results of a hard season’s training and racing, being just out of contention in their respective events.

The third championship event, the Sprint derby, was postponed due to rain.

Tour de Riverina opens with a bang

A new course was raced for the first time in the opening stage of the 2010 Tour de Riverina at Wodonga on Sunday.  Over 130 racers started the 60km handicap road race which started on the outskirts of Wodonga and headed through the townships of Barnawartha and Chiltern before returning to Wodonga. The course is fast and undulating and the bunches were soon chasing down the limit bunch.

With all but the block and scratch bunches together in the last 10kms the sprint was always going to be tight. With about 200m to go a rider fell and bought down a dozen other riders including Wagga's Tony Aichinger, Jeremy Scott, Stuart Murray, and 1st race rookie Scott Braid. All were OK escaping with minor grazes and the worst local casualty being Scott's bike. Two riders from other clubs had a trip to hospital as a result of the crash.

Fortunate to be ahead of the crash was best Wagga rider was Rohan Taylor (7th), Brodie Pearse (8th), Jason Condon (11th) and Craig Williams (12th).

On Saturday Simon Haworth, Dan Uden, Brodie Pearse (A grade); Jason Condon, Mark Wilson (B Grade); Steve Marks, Isaac Gilmore (C grade) and Dean Hart and Mick Schmidt (D grade)  Kelly Linden (womens A grade) took part in the MAC10 criterium racing in Albury.  A tough day was had by all in damp conditions in quality fields in the graded races. There were no podium finishers from wagga but it would be fair to say that racing was the winner on the day.

Southern Division championships
One of the best races on the local calendar is the Southern Division championships held at Breadalbane near Goulburn on the 28th of March.  Graded scratch races are the format and it is one of the few races we do where each rider rides for their club.  Points go towards the Joan Knight Shield a trophy for the best club on the day.  So it is really important that we get as many Wagga riders there as possible.  This event is held the day after the Butch Menz race (Stage 3 of the TdR) so 2 days racing is great practice for the McDonald's classic long weekend .

Racing starts at 10am.    Entries close the 12th of March.    more info here
Please notify Beth Gilmore well before the 12th if you intend to race.

Wagga riders in the Medals at Australian Track Nationals

The training has paid off for our riders in Adelaide this week.  The boys have done us proud.

Paul Fellows has taken silver in the mens team sprint with team mates Andrew Taylor and Peter Lewis. The NSW team was just 0.239s from the ACT gold medallists.  Paul also placed 9th in the mens individual 200m sprint with a time 10.801s and speed of 66.66km/h. The mens Keirin is held today so stay tuned for Paul's results in that event.

Andy Falconer won silver in the 1000m individual time trial with a time of 1:28.442 (ave speed of 40.7km/h). A great result from the hard training that he has been doing in recent months.

Jamie Green won bronze in the JM19 Sprint (200m) with a time of 10.681s and a lightening speed of 67.41km/h. A super fast effort from the man who is the fastest under 19yr NSW rider in the sprint.

Tom Regan
placed 11th fastest with a time of 11.18s and a speed of 64.4km/h.  Tom also finished 4th in the JM19 Keirin.

The NSW state track team has been announced and 4 Wagga Cycle club riders have been named in the squad.  A huge congratulations to Jamie Green, Tom Regan, Paul Fellows and Andy Falconer.  The rides will compete for NSW at the National Track Championships to be held in Adelaide on the 2-7th Feb.  All their hard work is paying off and we wish them all the best for a successful Championship.
