Wagga to Albury 135km Handicap

Albury/Wodonga Cycling Club have done a brilliant job at hosting this years John Woodman Memorial Handicap. The warmer weather certainly had an impact on the race with riders continually in search of water. Michael Tolhurst from Canberra and riding from scratch broke away from the A, B & C bunches to reel in the last of the D grade riders just before the cutting out of Walla Walla. Michael wasn't seen by the bunch again. He came over the line over a minute in from of Ashley Baines, 2nd and Ray Jarrett 3rd. Christian McDonald just made it across the line for 4th as the rest of back markers sprinted for 5th. Michael Marshall, Steven Marks, Lindsay Jordan, Simon Haworth and Ian Gunn represented Wagga CC. Simon called it a day at Culcain. Mick Marshall punchered north of Walla Walla and Lindsay Jordan had trouble with numb feet and called it day just out of Walla Walla. Steve and Ian finished in the top 15. It was a hard day congratulations to them both.

Saturday Morning Bunch Ride

The Saturday morning group swelled to 51 riders last Saturday. It was a real spectacle as the bunch snaked its way around corners. The biggest group prior to that was 41 so the record has been smashed. Please remember to consider your own and others safety when sharing the road with cars. All who ride with the Saturday Morning group do so at their own risk and should be aware of the potential dangers of the sport. If not then please ask somebody who you think has plenty of experience. You can go Here to get some ideas about Bunch Riding. Its a great document by Stephen Hodge, retired Aussie Pro rider who rode 9 Tour De France races.

Ashley Humbert is due to fly into town on Wednesday the 18 Oct 2006. You will have a chance to catch up with Ashley  at the Griffith handicap on the 28 Oct 2006 and the Wagga Golden Wheel Track Carnival on the 4/5 Nov 2006.

Wagga CC members Sorcha Flett and Lionel Harmer completed the 200km Canola Canter Audax ride last Sunday. As we all know the wind was extremely strong and made conditions very difficult. Lionel's effort was a little more courageous given that he fell off his bike turning right off Old Narrandera Rd after completing the first 100km leg. Lionel lost a fair bit of skin off his right side and bruised his hip, tough as nails. I'm sure the final push home from Junee was very character building.

Club Track Racing started last Wednesday. Check out the report Here.

Ashley gave it his all.

Ashley has given his all on the last 10km Mountain top finish Time Trial. Ashley went in with an 11second buffer over Alessandro Bisolti but it wasn't enough. Ashley after stage 4 was taken to the doctor to have a stomach problem treated. Ashley and the rest of the team were struck with a bout of Diarrhea. Unfortunately Ashley was effected the most. The Doctor gave him some medication to stop the diarrhea but the illness still effected his ability to perform at a high level. Ashley road stage 5 with the upset stomach and still held onto his lead. Ashley finished 4th in the Tour last year and came to the event with intentions of winning it. So he's understandably devastated by having another Tour victory slip through his fingers. He said in hind sight that he should have stayed in bed, as he spent the rest of the day after stage 6 vomiting. But when you are wearing the golden fleece its hard to throw in the towel. He said that he felt like he took ten years of his life with the all out effort. In the wash up Ashley finished 6th on GC 2min.06sec behind Alessandro Bisolti. Ashley will be heading home (Wagga Wagga) to a hero's welcome on the 16 Oct 2006.

The insane pedal pushers set off on their epic journey as planned at 5.00am Saturday morning. Iron woman Sorcha Flett got off the XPT Train at 3.00am in the morning after returning from a week long Uni course in Sydney. Sorcha resisted the desire to sleep and  hung around until the ride started at 5.00am. Mick Dunn, who is only new to the sport of cycling rolled into Albury with Greg Bugden at 11.00pm Saturday night. Now that's an epic ride, 18 hours and 350km. The rest of the crew set off at 5.00am on Sunday morning for the return trip home except for Mick, Greg and Blakey who left at 6.00am. Mick Dunn was said to have rolled into Wagga at 7.00pm on Sunday night. I bet a bottle of saddle sore cream that he was a little weary. One unnamed rider was said to have pulled the pin out in the middle of nowhere on Sunday and spent $150 on a cab fare back to Albury. Apart from that everybody made it around the 600km course, congratulations to them all.

Ashley Humbert on the Edge

Ashley is 1 stage away from his biggest win to date. Ashley narrowly missed winning the Baby Giro a couple of months ago after he had a hunger flat in last 3 km on the second last stage. The experience made him all the more determined to win the next one. Ashley only has a 10km Time Trial today to seal his first Tour victory. Ashley moved into the Tour lead after stage 4 when the leader dropped away. Ashley was level on time with Corti Marco (Ita) but Ashley was given the lead on count back. Ashley seized the day on stage five and took the outright lead by 11 seconds after finishing 8th, as part of a small break away group.

Wagga CC riders at the National Championships

Paul Fellows and Dirk Roshier had a DNF in the 65km U/17 Road Race. The winner was Michael MATTHEWS from the ACT in  time of 1.39.13 (average 39.30km/hr). Thomas Palmer was second.

Ellen Marks finished 13th (bunch Sprint) in the U/17 Women's 39km Road Race and Tara Bryan finished 37th (17.12min later). The winner was Camille PALLETT in a time of 1.10.43 (average 33km/hr). Ellen finished 14th in the Individual Time Trial and Tara Bryan Finished 34th. The winner, Jessy BYRNES time was 17:37.96. Ellen's time was 18.55.35 and Tara's time was 21.13.18.

Brodie Pearse finished 18th in the 39km Road Race and 2.28 down on the winner Lachlan MORTON, in a time of 59.04 (Average 39.61km/hr)

Ashley Humbert, second on stage and second overall.

Ashley is poised to take his first Tour win after a great 2nd place on stage 3. Ashley placed 4th on stage 2 and moved up to 7th on GC. He then came out and showed what a talented rider he is and finished second on stage 3, to move up to 2nd on GC. Ashley is 9 seconds in arrears with 3 stages to go. A win would certainly assure the Big Fella a Pro contract, fingers crossed. Ashley has a team mate, Zanasca Luca sitting 4th on GC.

Aussie Matt Goss has lost the Tour Lead and had a DNF on the stage 3 of the Tour of Britain

Posted 31 Aug 2006

Ashley Humbert's up the sharp end.

Ashley is currently competing in the 43rd Giro della Valle d'Aosta. The 6 stage event runs from the 29 Aug 2006 to 3 Sep 2006. Ashley is one of three Aussie competing in the Tour. The Tour covers 624km and ends with a 10km TT. Ashley has finished 15th out of 116 starters on the first stage and is 16 seconds off the leader.

Aussie Matthew Goss is currently leading the Tour of Britain

If have come across a Website for Albury Pro Rider David McPartland check it out it's pretty cool.

Road Presentation Night

The Road Presentation Day/Night is the 17 Sep 2006 at the Wagga RSL Golf Club located just off the Sturt Hwy at West Wagga. Festivities will kick off at 1.00pm with a mountain bike ride around Pomigalarna Reserve, followed by a BBQ  and awards at 2.30pm. The cost will be $5 a head or $15 a family (Prices to be confirmed).

All nominations for the Senior & Junior Cyclist of the year  need to be given to either Bob or Patty ASAP. All nominations should include achievements for the year covering Local, State and National results, Road and Track.

The Club had a bit of a mishap during Saturday's club race. Steve Taylor has unfortunately ridden into the back of Greg Scott as he stood on the edge of the rode. Greg was putting his chain back on after it had come off. Last reports said that Steve was very shaken but neither he or Greg were badly hurt. However Steve broke his frame.

This weekend will be the last Saturday afternoon club race for the year. Track racing will start on the first Wednesday in Oct 2006. The club is planning 20km Sunday morning road racing , date TBA.

This weekend Ellen Marks, Paul Fellow, Dirk Roshier and Tara Bryan are heading off to the National Club Championships in Queensland. Good Luck to them all.

Wagga CC members Lionel Harmer, Sorcha Flett, Greg Bugden and other slightly insane pedal pushers will be attempting to ride 600km in 48 hrs, my bum hurts just thinking about it! They will be covering 350km in the first hit out followed by some sleep, then another 250km session to finish off. They will be heading in a South East direction ending up in Albury for a well earned rest on the first day and on Sunday they will be heading in a  North West direction back to Wagga. Anybody wishing to donate skin for pending butt cheek skin grafts please contact the Web Master.

Ashley Humbert has placed 10th in the GP Sportivi di Podenzano, results Here

Last weekend Wagga members Sorcha Flett, Ian Gunn, Simon Haworth, Michael Marshall and Steven Marks contested the 50th 120km Cootamundra Annual. The 200 hundred strong field were  broken into 10 groups with 50 minutes separating limit and scratch. Ian Gunn and Sorcha Flett rode from the 33 minute group. Sorcha found the going a bit tuff and was dropped early in the race but to her credit she kept going with the same determination that she won the Canberra B grade Women's Tour with. Unfortunately Sorcha's day ended with a trip home in a packed Hiace, after she got a front wheel puncher 40km from home. Michael Marshall and Steve Marks were the next to start in the 28 minute group. Michael had a bit of back luck when he touched a wheel in front and had to go into stay upright mode. Michael in his successful attempt to stay upright forced his handle bars forward (STI levers pointing at the ground) and badly buckled his front wheel. Michael with his machine in less than race condition decided to call it a day. However he had a bit of fun on the way home, swapping off a few turns with some scratch markers. Steve Marks had some misfortune as well having to dodge an accident in his bunch. Unfortunately Steve zigged when he should have zagged and rode straight over a fallen rider. Steve stopped and made sure the riders was alright. He then spent the next 6 kilometres chasing his bunch to get back on. Simon Haworth  after his 2nd place at the Coota to Colac was moved back in the field to the 14 mintue group. Some of the experts earlier in the week had predicted that the winner would come from the 14  minute group. Not to disappoint the 14 minute group lit up the road and caught the 18 minute bunch and the 23 minute bunch with in 60 kms. Simon's group had also pulled away from the chasing 10 minute bunch. The 28 minute group with Steve Marks had caught the 33min (Ian Gunn), 45min and 50 min groups and looked to have a good lead coming out of Harden. The 14 minute group with a few passengers were in hot pursuit. The limit Markers still had 11 minutes on Scratch at Harden. The 14 min group made contact  with the limit markers within 10kms of Wallenbeen roundabout. The large pack of riders negotiated the roundabout at Wallenbeen and were now going to take some catching with a tail wind at there backs.  Willing workers were now getting a little hard to find with most riders in the lead pack starting to think about the finish. Two riders remained at the front of the field as the large pack made its way up to the top of Deer Park Hill. Previous winner Darrell Wheeler (1964 & 1993) was attempting to equal  Garry Crowe's record of 3 wins by riding away from the limit riders with one other coming out of Harden. However Darrell and Co were caught a couple of kilometres after the sprint at Deer Park Hill. Speeds were now reaching 60km/hr as the pack of 55 riders approached the finish. Again willing workers were a bit light on. Ian Gunn despite riding from the 33 min group jumped in and swapped off a few turns. The pack got with in a few hundred metres of the bridge that crosses the railway line and all of a sudden every body wanted to be on second wheel. The pack swarmed across the bridge and down both lanes to the next railway crossing, swept around the  left hand and then right hand turn into the finishing straight. Ian Gunn, Steve Marks and Simon Haworth were all in the hunt for the finish. Simon was about two thirds of the way down the field as they rounded the last corner. Again the un-educated started there sprint to early. Simon was marking Ray Jarrett from Cobram when Greg Fetonby (Albury/Wodonga) started his sprint through the middle of the pack. Simon changed plan and followed Greg through the chaos. With the finish line looming, Simon launched his sprint down the right hand side as Greg started to fade. Charlie Gascoyne (Orange) and Kevin Nicholls (St George) had already got a head start on the left hand side of the pack and were pulling clear. Simon despite gaining on Charlie and Kevin left his run to late and was just beaten by a fast finishing Paul Connor (Penrith Panthers) for third. Simon finished a very credible 4th. Ian Gunn in his first Annual finished in the money taking 14 place. Anthony Sleeman finished the first local, Kate Nicholls (Daughter of Kevin) finished first female and Robert McLachlan took fastest time, 2hr.41min.01sec (average speed 44.71Km/hr). Results Here and Photos.

Steven Marks, Sorcha Flett, Simon Haworth and Ian Gunn lined up for Sunday's 66km handicap around Coota's Suicide course. After Ian's great ride on Saturday he was dragged back to Steve's group. Sorcha got a lift to the group in front and Simon was put back to second block along with Charlie Gascoyne and Paul Connor. Sorcha again found the hilly course a bit much and was dropped on the last hill just short of the start/finish line on the first lap. Steve and Ian along with four others stepped on the gas and left there bunch behind. Simon's bunch was now riding away from block and caught the group two and a half minutes in front just after the finish of the first lap. They had averaged 44km/hr, second block were on fire and were reeling in the front groups quickly. A big pack of front markers  were all scrambling to get a wheel as they were caught just after the finish of the second lap but with the speed touching 54km/hr as the train went past it was going to be a big ask.  Steve, Ian and Co were picked up shortly after on the first of a series of small climbs down the back of the 33 km course despite their gallant effort. Hearts were pounding and leg muscles were screaming but that didn't deter handicapper Doug Wallace from yelling in excitement to the leaders on the climb to lift the pace and tail off the passengers. The race was entering its final stages and with Scratch no where in sight Marcus Hayman (Canberra) decided to try and ride away down the back straight. A few riders tried to go with him but couldn't match his speed. further counter attacks followed but Marcus stayed just out in front while the rest of the field started recovering for the flurry of expected attacks on the larger of the climbs for the day. The chasing peleton turned the corner, straight up a hill, closed the road down and lifted the pace as expected. Dropped riders were now starting to be picked up from the limit bunch. They had got themselves well organised and were proving to be a real task to catch. Steve Marks and especially Ian Gunn were having a great ride staying up with the front runners in the chase group. Simon despite the harder mark was getting on with the job and he too was up the front of the chase group. The field splintered over the climb and re-grouped a little on the down hill section just prior to the last climb of the day. More and more limit riders were being passed and the question was had we caught them all? Spectators on the top of the last hill were treated to a real spectacle as riders scrambled to chase an attack and a counter attack. With legs screaming riders dropped into the big gears and raced down the back side of the hill. Canberra Club riders were trying to organising a lead out train down the left hand side of the road. The finish was a fast down hill sprint with a left hand turn with about 500 metre's to go. Simon saw Charlie Gascoyne moving his way to the front and jumped on his wheel. It was now frantic and the speed was over 60km/hr. The left hand turn approached and it was important to get around the corner quick. Simon come around the corner and dropped the chain down to the 11, the speed was now reaching 70km/hr. He was fifth wheel and two riders back from Charlie when the Canberra rider in front dropped his chain off the big ring.  A small gap opened up and the finish line was coming up quickly. Charlie was now in full flight and battling it out with Marcus Hayman. Simon took off in pursuit but couldn't pull them back and  finished 4th in the bunch Gallop but all was in vain with nine Limit riders sprinting for the win moments before the rest of the field rounded the corner into the finishing straight. The limities were to good on the day and took out the top 8 places relegating Charlie to 10th and Simon to 13th. Anthony Challinor took fastest time. Results Here

Ashley has continued to dominate in Italian Elite racing. Ashley raced in the Memorial Fausto Coppi, 9 Aug 2006 and finished 2nd. check out the results here

Ashley has placed 7th in the 35th Gran Premio Capodarco, 16 Aug 2006. Ashley said that its the biggest one day race in Italy. The last couple of laps include a very steep cobbled climb (39 x 25). Ashley said that he had to use up a fair bit of petrol to get back on to the front group after some riders crashed in front of him on the second last lap. The effort of the second last lap had taken its toll when the hammer when down on the last climb and Ashley finished a very credible 7th and only 14 seconds off the win. check out the results Here

Chiltern 99km Geoff Dixon Memorial Handicap Interclub-05 Aug 2006

Simon Haworth has taken first and fastest in the 99km Geoff Dixon Memorial Handicap on Saturday. The win is Simon's first big win of his 15 years of racing. To add to WWCC success new comer Ian Gunn capped off a great ride with a 3rd place. Sorcha Flett was the only other WWCC rider to attend.

The big incident during the race was Brendan Washington puncturing after 45km of racing. Brendan was a favorite to win the event and the Riverina Point Score leader. Phil Twigg another highly placed Riverina Point Score rider met with ill fate breaking a seat clamp bolt, resulting in Phil's seat falling from his bike. Scratch stormed across the gap to bring the race all together after 66km. The high pace of the first two laps was taking its toll on the riders. With the race all together the dynamics of the race changed from a handicap to  scratch race.  Early on in the third lap Albury/Wodonga rider Simon Ross attacked the field and opened up a gap. The combination of Paul Clancy, Anthony Sleeman and Simon Haworth kept Simon Ross in check. Simon Ross saw that he was going no where and returned to the bunch. The bunch was fairly big as riders scrambled to hang on to the finish. Simon Haworth drove the pace hard up and over a couple of small hills to dislodge a few passengers. Paul Clancy attacked hard out of sharp left hand turn which saw 5 riders break clear for a short period. The bunch rolled along with willing workers in short supply. With about 5 km to go the paced slowed as riders stopped rolling through. Simon Haworth saw his opportunity and jumped clear of the bunch. Simon settled down after his attack and concentrated on driving it to the finish. Simon glanced around and to his surprise saw Ian Gunn on his wheel. Ian to his credit did his fair share on the front. Simon and Ian where managing to hold a 300 or 400 metre gap when Simon Ross jumped clear of the chasing bunch to bridge across the gap to Simon and Ian half way up the  last hill. The trio dropped the chain into the 11 and  drove hard down the other side of the hill. Ian found the pace a bit hard up and over the last little rise before the finish and dropped away. The two Simon's now side by side on the short rise up to the finish line drag raced it out for the prize. Simon Haworth had a bit more left in the tank and pulled clear to take a comfortable win. Ian Gunn held on to 3rd finishing clear of the chasing peleton. The power house Christian MacDonald from Cobram out sprinted the rest of the field to take fourth. The custodian of the Mullet, Ray Jarrett finish off the top five.

At the start of the race Simon was placed third in the point Score 11 points behind Brendan Washington. Brendan would have to be a non-starter and Simon would have had to win the  race to win the point score. Well one out of two nearly saw Simon win the Riverina Point Score Series. Brendan had 39 points at the start of the last race. He got 2 points for starting and with his DNF saw him finish on 41 points. Simon had 28 points at the start of the last race. He got 2 points for starting and 10 points for winning. Simon finished on 40 points. Adrian Miller narrowly beat the youngster Veronica Dudderidge to finish 3rd by one point. The full results can be viewed here

In the overall Club Title, Albury/Wodonga CC was to strong again, finishing on 375 points, Wagga CC was second on 163 points,  Griffith were 3rd on 78 points, Cootamundra was 4th on 75 points and Tolland rounded out the top 5 with 4 points.

The five clubs will endeavor to hold a meeting in the near future to sought out some exciting changes to the format for next year.

On behalf of all the riders I would like to thank all that were involved in the organising/running of the Riverina Point Score. I would also like to thank all the volunteers that helped with the running of races and I would like to thank those responsible for raising the very generous prize money that has been handed out over the series. lastly I would like to thank all the different Clubs Sponsors that have helped in any way and I hope as riders we support our generous sponsors whenever we can. See ya next year.

Lionel (second limit) rode away from his group in the final kilometres to take second behind Kathy Deblin (limit) the winner, Jane McNamara (limit) was third. Other Wagga CC riders to go where Dirk Roshier (second Block) 6th, Dirk finished off his ride well by following Brendan Washington's wheel as he attacked past block and second block riders. Simon Haworth (scratch) finished 8th, Steven Marks (second Block) was just behind in 10th or 11th, Nigel Irvine (second Block) finished in the chasing pack after a mountain of work on the front and Luke Butler (second Block) finished in the pack. Paul Fellows (block)  missed his bunch at the start. Paul took off in pursuit of the block bunch but was disadvantaged by his smaller gears. He was later picked up by Scratch and was left behind after he had a mechanical problem. Brendan Washington took out fastest time, 1:41:30/aver:39.01km/hr, 35 starters.

In other news sadly Tom Dawson has lost his brother who pasted away last night. If Tom's brother is half the man of Tom then I am sure that he would be an enormous loss to his family and to the community. It would be great if each Wagga member who reads this has  a minute of silence to Honor Tom's brother, our thoughts are with you Tom.

Riverina farmers are starting to get excited every time Wagga CC runs an Inter-club/State race. For the third consecutive event it has rained. Despite the wet conditions it wasn't overly cold. With big points on offer for the Riverina point score only 22 riders braved the tough conditions.

A Grade had 5 starters for the 54km scratch races including the leader of the point score Brendan Washington. Brendan lived up to his attacking style of racing and put the pressure on throughout the race. He finally got the gap he was looking for over the last hill 8km from the finish and won the event by 200 metres. Brendan backed up his road race performance with a strong ITT to win the overall Title of A Grade Riverina Champion.

Wagga CC despite having the numbers in B grade were unable to stop a fast finishing Allan Dudderidge from winning the B grade road race. However Allan found the ITT difficult and finished 4th opening the gate for Steven Marks to take the overall B Grade Riverina Champion Title.

Lindsay Jordan had a close tussle with Cootmaundra CC rider Paul Booker. However Lindsay was a just a bit to strong  and won the Road Race and ITT. Consequently Lindsay was crowned the C Grade Riverina Champion for 2006

The Next race in the Point Score series is the 99km Chiltern Classic, hosted by the Albury/Wodonga Club on the 5 Aug 2006.

Next weekend 22 July 2006,  Wagga CC is staging its Club Championships.

Michael Tolhurst from Canberra wins the Coota to Coolac inter-club and Brendan Washington takes the lead in the Riverina Point Score. Brendan now leads the point score by 5 point over new comer Tory Thomas. Albury/Wodonga rider Trent Perry was absent from the race and in doing so lost the opportunity to pick up some valuable points., he dropped to 3rd overall. Eight Albury/Wodonga riders occupied the top 10 prior to Saturdays race. There strangle hold has been reduced to seven with Wagga CC member Simon Haworth picking up a 4th place and 8 points to move up to 7th. Other Wagga Riders to go were Nigel Irvine and Ian Gunn.

The front of the race was caught by Michael Tolhurst on the climb back over Brawlin Hill. Michael attacked the chase group and rode away. Brendan Washington gave chase but could not bridge the gap. Simon Haworth, Anthony Sleeman and Anthony O'Connor were the next over the hill. Followed closely by Steven Doidge, Phil Twigg, David Stallan and Sean Wilson. limit riders were being dropped quickly by the flying Michael Tolhurst. Brendan Washington as usual put his head down and rode like he stole something. A chase group formed and started to swallow up tired dropped riders. The last rider to be caught by the chase group was Ian Gunn who was looking good for a placing but couldn't hold Michael Tolhurst wheel as he muscled his way to the finish. However Andrew Mohrs from Canberra managed to stay with Michael to take 2nd place. Brendan Washington held off the chase group for a well earned 3rd place. Simon Haworth won the bunch sprint to take 4th. Andrew Sleeman was 5th and first Local rider.

Ashley Humbert has left a very lasting impression upon the Baby Giro after he attacked on the first of 2 climbs during stage 9. The Peleton let Ashley ride away and by the top he had opened up a 2 minute lead. That mean't that Ashley was the Tour leader on the road. He hit the bottom of the second climb with 10 kilometres to go and he still had his 2 minute lead. Ashley increased his lead to 3 minutes with 3 km remaining when disaster struck in the form of hunger flat. Ashley was caught and passed in the last 3km and he lost 3min 36sec on the winner of the stage. He said that he could not even remember the last kilometre to the finish. Ashley said that he had an up set stomach at the start of the stage which may have resulted in food and fluid that he was taking in not to be properly digested resulting in the loss of energy. However not all was a disaster as Ashley spent a good part of the race on camera and was praised for his heroic efforts by the media.

In the end Ashley finished 9th overall. Results Here

Ashley Humbert has won stage 8 of the Baby Giro and in doing so has achieved one of his dreams by taking out his first really big win on the world stage.  Ashley Rang Ellen at home at 12.30am this morning over whelmed with excitement about the victory. He said the race was televised on TV across Europe. He said that Bradley McGee saw the race on TV and rang to congratulate him, among other top Australian riders. Ashley said that he stepped out of the bunch with about 1 km to go and went for the finish line like he stole something, 60km/hr. He said that with 300m to go a big Belgian  stepped out of the chasing bunch and was coming at him at a great rate of knots. Ashley said that he did not dare celebrate the win until he saw his front wheel cross the line first and then it was time to punch the air.

In taking the win Ashley has moved a bit closer to the overall victory. He is now in 11th position, 59 seconds off first place. Tonight's stage is the one that decides who the overall winner is going to be. The recent string of top three podium finishes, including a recent win plus the huge victory today should hopefully see Ashley achieve his next dream of a Pro contract with a Pro Tour team, fingers crossed. Check out the results Here and Here.

Past winners of the Baby Giro have been riders like Gilberto Simoni and Marco Pantani. The highest Australian finisher was Scott Davis in 2002. He finished in 3rd place and signed a contract with T-Mobile in 2005.

Difficult conditions, are the two words that come to mind when you talk to participants in the Wagga Motors Open/Sid Demmery Memorial and Microtech/Butch Menz Memorial Handicaps on the weekend. Wagga Wagga has not seen a day of rain for months. However the rain Gods decided that Saturday was the time to tease a few farmers with Gold (water) from the sky.

It was reported that over 30 riders experienced punchers on the course on Saturday. With the majority recorded on the Millwood Rd.  The difficult undulations on Millwood road also resulted in a crash in the 10 minute group with four rides coming down. Albury-Wodonga's Allan Dudderidge was one of the riders in the fall. He fortunately only suffered some grazing. However his bike suffered extensive damage.

The finish was one of the best for years with 3 riders being chase by a dozen or more (150 metres in front), who were being chased by scratch (100 metres behind). Bradley Clarke (winner) and his two companions managed to make it to the line with 50 metres to spare and scratch were just making there way through the chasing bunch in the sprint. There were some very cold and wet riders in the finish. WWCC riders Steven Marks and Ian Gunn were both in the finishing group with Steven Marks taking the prize for first local.

Blue sky's greeted riders on Sunday for the  Microtech handicap. However to continue with the theme of a difficult weekend a strong icy wind from the south east blew up, it was freezing. The strong winds certainly suited the Scratch markers. A down hill tail wind after the turn at The Rock assisted the Scratch marks in catching the majority of the field  by the turn. Consequently the uphill run into a head wind slowed the front markers considerable allowing what was left of the back of the field to catch up. The race was pretty well altogether just after The Rock. It was now a matter of who could hang on as the back markers drove the speed up over 60km/hr. Any passengers had there work cut out for them when the course took a turn to the left, across the hurricane like wind, basically shutting the road down to sitters. I was told that the lead car had to accelerate to nearly 100km/hr to pull away from the sprinting riders in the finish. Stuart Shaw from Canberra was the eventual winner, with Brendan Washington pushing him all the way to the finish.

On behalf of the riders I would like to thank our two sponsors for the weekend, Wagga Motors and Microtech. I would also like to thank the people involve in running the event, whether it was standing on the corner with a stop/slow sign, driving a lead/follow car, holding a stop watch, handing out/taking back numbers, cooking sausages, picking up drowned riders, organizing media, administering first aide, recording numbers at sprints, putting out/picking up signs, organizing prize money, grading riders/handicapping riders, conducting presentations, organizing/fitting of 2-way radios and flashing lights, putting together race programs, applying for race approval with local Council and Police and I am sure that I have missed a job/task so thank you to those I have not mentioned. There is a lot that goes into a bike race taking  place and without the faithful turning up to help there wouldn't be a race.

One thing that will certainly be addressed for next year is a sad wagon with a capacity to hold a few bikes and riders.

I look forward to seeing you all next Year.

Race 5 of the Inter-club series is on this weekend Sunday 18 June 2006 at Bellbridge. You can ring Barry O'Hagan on 0269252404 or Martin Eames on 0260233397 to enter. Race starts at 11am from the Bellbridge Boat Club, $600 in prize money.

Jamie Green is one happy lad after receiving a brand new Diamond Back interval Pro courtesy of Greg Devries at Kidson Cycles.

Simon Haworth after hearing about Jamie's accident with the car Monday last week approached the Rules Club a great supporter of Jamie with the plan of getting him a  new bike. The Rules Club instantly came aboard with a cash donation after hearing about Jamie's accident.

Lionel Harmer, Greg Dyde  and Chris Chamberlain (Chambo) all great supporters of cycling, without hesitation put their hand in their pocket and gave generously  to help Jamie.

The next piece of the puzzle was Greg Devries. Greg, who is still recovering from a recent car accident himself (a car turned in front of Greg whilst he was riding his TT bike in Port Macquarie) jumped at the chance to help Jamie back onto a quality bike.

I would like to thank all those involve for there support and I am sure that the bigheartedness of those involve will have a very positive impact on a young and talented cyclist/teenager.

The event sold out four months prior to last year’s race and 850 riders missed out.  With fields boasting some of the best mountain bikers from Australia and overseas, keen interest in the event is guaranteed, and the weekend remains a highlight of the Australian mountain bike calendar. Cootamundra Haycarters

The Wagga Club had 9 members contest the Hay Carters 70 km handicap on Saturday the 13 May 2005, Sorcha Flett (Lifted to 16 min bunch), Ian Gunn (16 min bunch), Lionel Harmer(12min bunch), Dean Hart (lifted to12 min bunch), Simon Haworth (7.30 min bunch), Bill Higginson (21 min bunch), James Hogan (16 min bunch),  Nigel Irvine (9.30 min bunch) and Steven Marks (12 min bunch) were the nine riders to go.

A beautiful day greeted 212 starters and 9 bunches rolled out from the start. Limit had a 21 minute head start on Scratch. The Stock Hills reputation is spreading far and wide with many riders deciding to look after themselves as much as possible prior to the hill.  All bunches experienced major losses,  Dean Hart (fresh from his win at Coolamon), Jim Hogan and Bill Higginson  were Wagga's casualties on Stock Hill.

Survivors of the 4 minute and 6 minute bunches caught the 7.30 minute and 9.30 minute bunches on the Bonnie View Hill (approx 20km into race). Nigel Irvine found Bonnie View Hill hard going as did many others.

Ian Gunn was caught by the huge rampaging bunch on the run up to the top of the Deer Park Hill. The hard working Lionel Harmer (looking a little tired) was engulfed a few hundred metres from the top of the Deer Park Hill. Simon Haworth led the massive bunch over the top of the Deer Park hill and picked up the second last Wagga member, Steve Marks.

At this point parts of the 16 minute and 21 minute bunch were still away. The massive bunch roared down towards the finish line picking up riders dropped from the leaders. 6 kilometres from home, what was left of Scratch raced around the massive amount of riders to take up the chase at the front. With 3 kilometres to go limit came into sight. The  massive chasing group of riders containing Scratch were unaware that 3 riders had broken away from the front group that they were bearing down on. Unfortunately the 3 leaders were not familiar with the course and  took a wrong turn after crossing the railway crossing, bummer. Just prior to that the rest of the 21 and 16 minute groups crossed the railway bridge and looked back down the road to see  the advancing swarm of riders. The last remaining Wagga rider,  Sorcha Flett  along with the rest  took off for the finish. In hot pursuit the massive field snaked its way around the twists and turns onto the finishing straight and swallowed  up the limit riders with 300 metres to go. As usual the uneducated started their sprint to early and faded with 100 metres to go.

Peter Fitzpatrick (St George Club) riding off 2 minutes took the victory. Robert Carter (Randwick) riding off Scratch took second and fastest. A new race record, covering the 66km in 1 hr 26 min 31 sec (48.55km/hr).  Charles Gascoyne (Orange) was third. Simon Haworth worked his way through the chaos and placed 7th. David Holder was the first Local Finisher.

Cootamundra to Coolac

The Wagga Club had 4 members contest the Coota to Coolac 80 km handicap on Sunday the 14 May 2005, Sorcha Flett (16 min bunch), Ian Gunn (lifted 22.30 min bunch), Lionel Harmer(16 min bunch) and Simon Haworth (7.30 min bunch).

The 4 minute bunch led by Brendan Washington swept up the 6 minute group early and then set their sights on the 7.30 minute bunch. The 7.30 group containing Wagga rider Simon Haworth were caught after 25km. The group swelled to 50 + riders with everyone wanting to do a turn. The speed was consistently around 50 km/hr, it was going to be hard for Scratch to catch the back of the race. The 4, 6 and 7.30 minute groups caught the 9.30 bunch by the turn. It was going to take a massive effort by the limit groups to get home for the win. Brendan Washington after being a driving force behind the chase got a flat after 50km and was out of the race, The now massive chasing group flew past the lead group containing Sorcha Flett and Lionel Harmer just before the climb back over Brawlin Hill. Lionel Harmer commented at the finish about what a spectacular sight it was to see nearly 200 hundred riders weaving their way up and around the climb. The massive field split over the climb and about 70 riders raced to the finish line 9 km away. With 2 kilometres to go the tactics started. Two riders were allowed to ride off the front and get a 50 metre gap. As the riders approached the finish the speed increased and the massive pack started to fill both lanes and jockey for position. It was all together now and the sprint was on. Three riders came together on the left hand side and lost there momentum slowing others behind them. The middle of the pack was now surging for the line. The right hand side of the bunch dropped away opening the way for Wagga rider Simon Haworth to make his move for the win down the side. Boom, it was over  Gerard Donaldson (Lidcombe/4 min) took the win by 5 cm from Simon (Wagga/7.30min) in a very close finish for second with Heath Wade (Canberra/6 min), third. Anthony Sleeman was the first Local finisher.

Rob Carter (Randwick Botany) made it a double by taking the sprint for fastest time well after the race had finished in a time of 1 hr 38 min 28 sec for the 80km,  average speed of 48.75 km/hr.
