Wagga Wagga Cycling Club Leader Article 19 December 2007

Another windy night at the track tested the riders and their skills last Wednesday night. The pocket rockets Henry Davis was the first to taste victory from Sebastian Quirk and Brandon Ellis, in the next race Sebastian took out the race closely followed by Brandon and Jackson Wykes in third. In the 2 lapper unfortunately Brandon and Sebastian clipped wheels and came down on the far side of the track, luckily with just a few scratches, but letting Jackson Wykes take the race with Henry Davis in second. All the boys were very deserving of a McDonalds award this week putting a smile back on their faces, a big thank you to Dr English for making sure they were both ok. With smaller numbers due to the carols by candlelight  the U/11 A’s and B’s combined to give us some very exciting racing. The 1 lap h/cap was won by Lachlan Hovious closely followed by Bailey Ellis and Saxby Harrison and in the 2 lapper Bailey managed to hold on for a win. The scratch race was a hard fought race in the wind with Saxon Hodges riding a good race to win from Saxby Harrison and Zac Marshall. The U/13’s and 15’s also combined with Robert Smith winning the 2 lap h/cap from Greg Westerman and Emma Apolony and Greg getting the better of them to win the 3 lapper. The scratch race was ridden into a fairly strong wind with Tom Hindmarsh staying away from the field to win from a fast finishing Jeremy Scott and Lucy Regan. All the winners received McDonalds awards for their efforts.

The seniors B grade 2 lap h/cap was won by Alex Ross, Lyn Hart second and Steve Taylor close for third. In the A grade Nigel Irvine took the honours from Tom Regan and Paul Fellows. The 5 lap h/cap was an all in race with Brodie Pearse, Josh Apolony and Steve Marks sharing the money. The wind had picked up again by the scratch race making it a race of tactics, B grades 15 lapper was ridden well by Josh Apolony taking the win from Jamie Rudie and Isaac Gilmore and the 20 lap A grade was a close finish with Tom Regan taking it on the line from Brodie Pearse and Bill Robertson in third.

Last Saturday Ellen Marks finished 4th in the NSW U/19’s Individual Pursuit in Sydney. This weekend our Under 19’s, Ellen Marks, Netasha Pearse, Paul Fellows and Dirk Roshier will travel to Sydney again for the NSW championships. We wish them all good luck in their chosen events and will bring you results in the New Year,

Tonight will be the final week of racing before Christmas with a fun night planned for the juniors and a visit from Santa as well. Racing will continue again on the 9th of January. Please remember to get your entry money to Sonia Marshall for the Southern Division track championships to be held in Goulburn on the 13th January. The running of the Wagga Golden Wheelrace carnival was held over the weekend, unfortunately Saturdays racing was disrupted by bad weather. Sunday saw an overcast sky but the club was able to hold a very successful day of racing. The programme included races from U/9’s up to the senior grades with a wheel race held for each. All the Wagga riders road well with most picking up some prize money throughout the days events with juniors Zac Marshall and Jonathon Carroll successful in winning their age division Wheelraces. The Telstra Shop Golden Wheelrace honours this year went to our very own Paul Fellows who took it out in a sensational sprint to the finish line. Paul takes home a $1000 cash, the Diamonds on Baylis Pendant and a Sash. Not to be outdone Ellen Marks won the Orthodontics Wagga Women’s Wheelrace with a gutsy ride, her prize $300 and a Sash. Ellen also came 2nd in the Rules Club 2 lap Open Wheelrace with yet again another fantastic ride. Ellen and Paul have been riding together with the Wagga Cycle Club since they were Pocket Rockets, and have trained and ridden at State, National and last year the Junior Olympics level together. Winning these races is a fantastic achievement for both of them and the Wagga Cycle Club. Congratulations and a huge thank you to all that competed and helped with the setting up and running of the carnival in such trying conditions. Racing will continue tonight at the track and a reminder to those that haven’t brought in a raffle prize. This weekend will see the running of the John Woodman Memorial Wagga to Albury Handicap, good luck to all those riding and a reminder that entries for the Central Coast track Carnival, hosting the NSW Country track championships closes on Sunday 11th.

Wagga Wagga Cycling Club Leader Article – 9th May 2007

An excellent weekend for the Wagga Wagga Cycling Club with the successful running of the Gwen French Memorial, Orthodontics Wagga Wagga Junior two day Tour.  The tour took a new turn this year with a new major sponsor and a new course at Wantabadgery.  130 riders travelled from near and far to contest the 4 events run over the weekend and from all reports the course proved to be challenging for the older riders, while there being a safe track for the young ones.  A big thanks must go to the Wantabadgery community, especially their Rural Fire Brigade volunteers who not only gave up their town for the weekend but their time in providing refreshments and policing the corners.  Thank you also to the hard working cycling club committee and all the helpers who gave a hand to make the weekend a success, without you all there would be no tour.

Locals raced well in all grades with Lachlan Scott taking overall general classification for the under 9s in front of Zachary Marshall.  In the under eleven girls Edwina Funnell took overall classification with Jessica Marshall taking third and Emily Bruce in fifth.  Other under eleven girls to race well over the distance was Alice Ham and Dot Funnell.  Cameron Scott proved dominant in the under eleven boys taking general classification with Greg Westerman and Saxon Hodges riding hard all weekend.  Lucy Regan proved too strong in the under 13 girls taking the prize money.  In the under 13 boys Max Housden and Louis Funnell rode well in a tough field, with Lidcombe Auburn rider Michael Docker proving too strong.  Erin Doyle was the lone Wagga rider in the under 15 women’s doing the club proud taking a place in the overall classification, well done.

With 29 riders, the under 15 men’s were separated into A and B grade.  In the B grade Waggas own Isaac Gilmore came home in fine style to claim overall classification win in the grade with Andrew Ham and Matthew Garlan also featuring in the placings, Jeremy Scott also rode well.  In the under 15 men’s A grade Wagga rider Tom Regan rode well on day one despite illness with the grade being a close affair across the line all weekend.  With no under 17 women from Wagga riding the event was wrapped up by Megan Dunn from Dubbo.  Thirty three under 17 men competed in two grades over the four events, both grades were hotly contested and close across the line.  In the under 17 B grade local riders Brodie Pearse, Jeremy Smith and Jamie Green all took home some prize money for the weekend, with excellent results.  In the under 17 A grade the camera was called upon to place the riders with positions to close to call for the naked eye.  Wagga rider Jonathon Ham rode well contesting the grade.  With the Nationals selection race being held elsewhere for the under 19s only a handful made the trek to Wagga for this weekend racing, local Paul Fellow showed that he could match it with them on the road with some great racing.  Well done to all competitors.  A full breakdown of results will be available from the website www.waggacyclingclub.com.au later in the week.

Dirk Roshier travelled to Moombool for the under 19’s National selection road races.  From all reports Dirk had a mixed couple of days with a good time in the first time trial and some mechanical trouble in the first road race, official results are not yet at hand.

Wagga Wagga Cycling Club Leader Article – Wednesday 28th March 2007

Well Gold Wagga Gold was the call at Dubbo velodrome last Sunday when 14 Wagga Cycling Club junior riders travelled west to contest the NSW   Under 9, 11 and 13 track championships.  In the Under 9 division Lachlan     Scott proved his dominance in this age group taking out three Gold medals in the time trial, Sprint Derby and scratch race.  Zac Marshall kept Lachlan honest in some very close racing to claim the silver medals in all three events.  In the under eleven division Cameron Scott took a Gold Medal in the time trial and silver medals in the other two disciplines.  In the Under 13 girls division Lucy Regan rode strongly to take Gold medals in the Sprint Derby and Scratch race and took the silver medal in the time trial. Max Housden also had a great carnival in the Under 13 Boys claiming the silver medals in all three events in an extremely competitive and large field. On the day across all divisions the Wagga rider brought home half the gold medals and three quarters of the silver medals on offer. Congratulations to master coach Bob Robertson his dedication is appreciated by all the riders and parents.

The last club track meeting of the season was held last Wednesday in excellent conditions. In the Pocket Rockets Rachel Trenaman took out the double claiming first on the podium in both events. The minor placing's were filled by Henry Davis, Saxby Harrison and Zac Burton. In the Under 11 B’s division the placing's were shared between Georgia Harris, Emily Bruce, Virginia Carroll, Kruse Harrison and Dot Funnell. The Under 11 A’s as usual turned on the fireworks with some exciting and close racing. The podium was filled by Louis Funnell, Zac Marshall, Saxon Hodges, Robert Smith, Cameron Scott and Greg Westerman.

The senior riders then hit the track for one final effort. In the Under 13’s Lucy Regan, Jacqui Marks, Tom Hindmarsh, Sam South, Cariad Wallace, Max Housden and Jono Carroll all figured in the placing’s whilst in the Under 15 division Tom Regan took the double claiming first place in two events on offer whilst Erin Doyle claimed first in the scratch race. The minor podium positions were filled by Jeremy Smith, Baden Housden and Alex Ross.

All in was the name of game for the rest of the night. In the two lap handicap Mandy Hindmarsh took a well deserved win followed by Jamie Green and Brett Moyston. The five lap handicap proved a torrid affair with John Hovis holding off a flying Bill Robertson and the consistent Lindsay Jordan. The graded scratch race saw the A graders chasing the rest of the field and reigning supreme over 20 laps with Fellows, Robertson and Irvine taking the trifecta. Thanks again to all the volunteers and committee for providing another excellent and successful track season.

Until next week train hard and ride safe.

CLUB RACE 24 MARCH 2007

Although the day dawned overcast and turned decidedly worse mid-morning, by race time, all rain and most of the cloud cover had cleared away. All that remained was a blustery south westerly gale, or so it seemed.

A bakers dozen braved what had been threatening conditions to continue their build up to future events including the upcoming next leg of the Tout de Riverina in Griffith on Saturday April 14th.

Thankfully, an always hardy group of volunteers turned up to support the club. The afternoon was organised by the injured Ian Hume who was ably assisted by, amongst others, Trevor Gilmore, Trish Fellows and Stephen Smith. On behalf of all the competitors, a special thanks to these folk for helping out.

First group away was made up of Tony Aichinger and Andrew Felbar off 18 minutes.  Then came Jeremy Smith, Issac Gilmore, Anthony Webber from West Wyalong and Ellen Marks off 10 minutes.  AS these groups headed up the road, those left waiting had little idea of how tough it would be getting to the turn at O’Brien’s Creek Road.

Next away were Andrew Tonkin, Jason Condon, Jim Hogan and Steve Taylor, off 5 minutes then Paul Fellows, Steve Marks and Bill Robertson 3 minutes behind off scratch for the day.

At times it seemed harder to push on down the hill to the valley against the wind than riding up hill, but thankfully the change of direction and the road up to the turn a round at the end of the bitumen provided welcome relief and saw much faster speeds achieved. One had to disregard the cow droppings on the road from grazing cattle in the long paddock however; one competitor was somewhat startled when a young heifer bolted out in front of him.

The run back down to the bridge saw the scratch group round up other groups in front of them, picking up the likes of Jim Hogan and Jason Condon to help with the work load. Still out in front were the likes of big Tony , Ellen Marks and Jeremy Smith, winner of two out of four of the last club races.

With the wind at their backs and the sniff of the chequered flag, the pace picked up considerably. Speeds of at least 10 kilometres per hour were recorded heading uphill compared to the trip out downhill and into the wind.

As the distance to home shortened, those remaining in the scratch group upped the pace even further as they still hadn’t round up all starters, but alas, to no avail. In the end, the gap between the final place getters came down to almost nothing. Tony Aichinger held out a strong finishing Paul Fellows by half a wheel whilst back the same distance was Steve Marks closely followed by Bill Robertson and Jason Condon. Great handicapping Mr Hume.

See you all next Saturday.
